The 93 km long Kinzig , emerging in the central Black Forest near Loßburg , has an area of ​​influence of 1,406 km², the greater part of which is in the Black Forest. Here, on its initial south-south-west course at larger tributaries, it successively includes the 20 km long Kleine Kinzig , which almost reaches its own upper course length at the confluence, and the Schiltach , which even exceeds this there with almost 30 km. It then moves west, taking in the 29 km long Gutach and the 31 km long Wolf , also known as Wolfach . At Haslach it turns on its north-west course for the rest of the course, on this section the very short Erlenbach still flows into the Black Forest , but which, together with its large upper course Harmersbach, reaches 19 km in length. After leaving the low mountain range in the Upper Rhine Plain near Offenburg , almost only its most important tributary flows, namely the 57 km long Schutter just before its own mouth at Kehl .

Already in the area of ​​its western course, then increasingly on its north-western course in the Black Forest, artificial mill ditches often flow parallel and close to the Kinzig, mostly close to the Kinzig next to its flood dam, which then also absorb the waters from the side valleys, which are therefore far down the valley from their original ones The mouth of the Kinzig. In the flat Upper Rhine Plain there are remains of oxbow lakes next to the river, and a couple of right arms branch off here, which reach the receiving Rhine via other river systems . The same applies to the large Schutter tributary, which has a few corresponding left branches in the Upper Rhine Plain, which lead to the Rhine stream in a more westerly direction.
