Lohne is a basic center and seat of the unified community Wietmarschen in Lower Saxony Grafschaft Bentheim . With 7,291 inhabitants (2017), Lohne is the largest town in the municipality.

The place is southeast of Wietmarschen on the federal highway 213 ( Nordhorn - Lingen - Bremen ). The A 31 ( Emden - Bottrop ) runs not far to the west . The Nordhorn air / ground shooting range is located five kilometers to the southwest and Nordhorn-Lingen airfield to the west .

Ems-Vechte Canal

North, the 145 is  hectare large nature reserve Moor Schlatts and Gentiles in Wachendorf .
The Ems and Dortmund-Ems Canal run five kilometers to the east . The Ems-Vechte Canal crosses the local area four kilometers to the south .

history

The place Lohne was first mentioned in 1152 and 1154 when the Sünte Marienrode monastery was founded . The place names Südlohne , Mittellohne , Nordlohne and Lohne appeared on the Oerde as early as 1285 . In the 14th century it belonged to the possessions of the bishops of Münster , who resided at Herzford Castle (today Lingen).

The Church of St. Antonius was built between 1849 and 1851. It was demolished in 1970 and replaced by a new building in 1972.

In 1870 the Ems-Vechte Canal was built through the municipality with the help of French prisoners of war and opened in 1879.

After the First World War , the German Wasteland Culture (Dökult) drained a few thousand hectares of swamp and wasteland in the Lohner field and made them usable as agricultural land.

In 1933 the fire brigade was founded in Lohne.

Ein and Umgemeindungen

Until February 28, 1974, Lohne formed the municipality of Schepsdorf-Lohne in the district of Lingen with Nordlohne, Lohnerbruch, Herzford and Schepsdorf . While Schepsdorf was incorporated into the city of Lingen, the other parts of the municipality were combined with the municipalities of Wietmarschen, Schwartenpohl and Wachendorf to form the new municipality of Wietmarschen. During the district reform on August 1, 1977, the new community was incorporated into the Grafschaft Bentheim district. In 1978 the towns of Herzford and Wachendorf were renegotiated to the town of Lingen.

Culture and sights

In Lohner Sand , a nature trail and a Bee Trail was established. Cultural monuments are the preserved remains of large stone graves in the vicinity.

Economy and Infrastructure

In Lohne there are four kindergartens, a primary school, a high school and a public library. The Kulturkreis Lohne is committed to the preservation of historical buildings and runs a local museum.

Lohne can be reached via two bus routes operated by the Emsland-Süd transport association: bus route 161 from Wietmarschen to Lingen and bus route 165 from Nordhorn to Lingen. The tariffs of the Verkehrsgemeinschaft Grafschaft Bentheim apply . Line 165 runs every hour during rush hour. At certain times of the year, route 161 is equipped as a Fietsenbus on Saturdays and Sundays . The Fietsenbus has a trailer that allows passengers to carry bicycles with them. In Lingen at the ZOB you have a connection to the trains of the Deutsche Bahn AG and to other bus lines of the Verkehrsgemeinschaft Emsland-Süd.
