Unterweitersdorf is a municipality in Upper Austria in the district of Freistadt in the Mühlviertel with 2181 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). The community is located in the judicial district of Freistadt .
geography
Unterweitersdorf is 333 m above sea level. A. in the Mühlviertel between the state capital Linz and the district capital Freistadt an der Kleinen Gusen . The extension is 4.5 km from north to south and 4.9 km from west to east. The total area is 11.3 km². 26.5% of the area is forested, 64.6% of the area is used for agriculture.

history
Bronze Age barrows with grave goods from the 13th to 11th centuries BC are the oldest traces of human settlement in the municipality to date. Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria, the area has belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century. "Weitersdorf", an estate, was first mentioned in a document in 1200. Since 1490 it has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns . During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times.
Since 1918 the place belongs to the federal state of Upper Austria. After Austria was annexed to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the "Gau Oberdonau". After 1945 Unterweitersdorf was in the Soviet occupation zone and after 1955 the infrastructure was expanded and rebuilt, especially in the early 1980s with the connection to the motorway.

Development and structure
In 1869, 629 people lived in the municipality. The population stagnated until 1951, after which it began to grow. A higher growth has been recorded since 1971, which can also be related to the construction of the Mühlkreis Autobahn . In 1991 the community had 1,415 inhabitants, in the 2001 census it had already 1,704, which corresponds to an increase of 20.4%. On January 1st, 2008 the community had 1951 inhabitants, the highest level in history.
In the 2001 census, the proportion of residents who were 60 years of age and older was 14.6%; 21.2% were under 15 years old. The proportion of the female population was 48.7%.
Of the 1342 residents of Unterweitersdorf, who were over 15 years old in 2001, 4.1% had graduated from a university , technical college or academy . Another 12.0% had completed a high school diploma, 51.6% had completed an apprenticeship or a vocational middle school and 33.3% of all Unterweitersdorfer had compulsory school as the highest qualification.
Origin and language
The German dialect that is commonly spoken in the Unterweitersdorf area and in Upper Austria is Middle Bavarian . In 2001, 98.5% of Unterweitersdorfer stated German as a colloquial language. Another 1.5% spoke other languages.
The proportion of Unterweitersdorfer with foreign citizenship was in 2001 with 0.9% far below the average of Upper Austria. 0.2% of the Unterweitersdorf population had citizenship from Germany and 0.7% were other citizens. In 2001, around 2.3% of Unterweitersdorfer were born in a country other than Austria.

The municipal council and mayoral elections take place every six years, at the same time as the state elections. From 1945 until 1997 the ÖVP always achieved an absolute majority. The second strongest party was always the SPÖ , which has been the strongest party since 1997. In 2003, 2009 and 2015, the SPÖ was the party with the highest number of votes and governs with an absolute majority. Other parties played no role in the municipal council elections until 2015; in 2015, a third political force, the Unterweitersdorf citizens' movement, made it into the council for the first time.

Günther Zillner of the SPÖ has been the mayor of the community since July 2, 2020. The next municipal council election will be held regularly in 2021.
coat of arms
The municipal coat of arms shows a silver, adjoining St. Andrew's cross, covered with two diagonally crossed, blue dragoon sabers. The motif is based on the fact that on May 7, 1809 a skirmish and on May 18, 1809 a battle between the French and Austrian hussars in the Unterweitersdorf area took place in the Mühlviertel. The municipality colors are blue-white-red.
The municipal coat of arms and colors were awarded on June 18, 1973.

Sports
The Unterweitersdorf Sports Union was founded in 1965 and consists of the sections soccer, stick sports, tennis, volleyball, gymnastics and target sports. Jürgen Stiftinger is the chairman.
The Askö Unterweitersdorf offers the sections chess, skiing, hiking and volleyball. Chairman is Ludwig Kürnsteiner.

The Mühlkreis Autobahn A 7 offers very good transport links to Linz . Furthermore, the results Pragerstraße that Königswiesener road and the Mühlviertler road through the municipality.
Public institutions and education
A kindergarten and a primary school are available in the village . In addition, there is a library and a branch of the Volkshochschule Freistadt. There is currently a general practitioner in the community who also works in Gallneukirchen.

The Unterweitersdorf volunteer fire brigade currently has five emergency vehicles, a command vehicle, a fire fighting vehicle tunnel, a four-wheel drive extinguishing vehicle, a small fire engine and a team transport vehicle.
Due to its responsibility as the portal fire brigade for the Götschka tunnel between Unterweitersdorf and Neumarkt im Mühlkreis, a mobile large fan (MGV) on a trailer basis, especially for tunnel operations, has been added to the vehicle fleet since June 2015.
The fire brigade had been under the leadership of Commander Main Fire Inspector Jerome Wörister and Commander Deputy Chief Fire Inspector Michael Thauerböck since March 2013. At the command election on March 20, 2018, Commander Wörister, who resigned from his position, was replaced by HBI Gernot Schneider.
