Ludwig Westernacher (born April 5, 1811 in Echzell , † September 6, 1884 in Büdingen ) was a German doctor , politician and honorary citizen of the city of Büdingen.

Life

Ludwig Westernacher attended the Büdinger Gymnasium under the director Georg Thudichum from October 30, 1819 . With his Matura exam in March 1828, he studied medicine at the medical faculty of the State University of Giessen . At the beginning of his studies in Giessen, Westernacher joined the Old Giessener Burschenschaft Germania in 1828 , from which he later left because he could not support the plans of the extremes that were influential in it.

After receiving his doctorate on September 16, 1833, Westernacher continued his studies in Berlin , Vienna , Paris and London . He then joined his father's practice. In 1840 he got a job as a physician surgeon in Büdingen in the Grand Duchy of Hesse . In 1844 he was appointed physician (district doctor).

Impressed by the social and political upheavals of 1848 , Westernacher became politically active. From 1848 he was in charge of the Büdinger Liberals . Westernacher ran for the National Assembly in 1848 . The Giessen police commissioner Lorenz Nover later names the physics doctor Ludwig Westernacher and chairman of the Patriotic Association in Büdingen, as “special activists” in the second phase of the revolution in mid-May 1849. He used his influence to “drive the masses out of the princes and found them to heat up the republic ”. According to Nover, Westernacher is said to have bought powder for 150 guilders these days and had 12,000 cartridges manufactured. Finally, Westernacher belonged to the second chamber of the 12th state parliament of the Grand Duchy of Hesse in 1849/50. Westernacher ran for the 13th Hessian state parliament in the Salzhausen constituency. The reason for this was Westernacher's plan to go to Schleswig-Holstein to support the local freedom struggle in the Schleswig-Holstein war as a doctor.

In April 1848 Westernacher traveled to North America , whose important cities he visited. On October 27, 1848, he returned to Büdingen for his father's 70th birthday. In the autumn of 1850 he accompanied the Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg to Venice , where he stayed for a year.

In 1859, Prince Bruno zu Ysenburg and Büdingen appointed him court physician and transferred the Ysenburg medical office to him while retaining his position as district physician . For an annual payment of 660 guilders , Westernacher undertook to provide the members of the princely house and the court servants with medical assistance at all times. Westernacher received an assurance from the Rentkammer that he would be able to live in his father's house for an annual rent of 100 guilders with quarterly notice on both sides. The “Westernacher House” is located on Damm 2 by the former Zum Schwanen inn . In 1863 Westernacher bought the house and its outbuildings after it had been converted into a courtyard. 1952–1954 the city of Büdingen bought the property with its 4000 m² garden from the community of heirs. Edith Kölsch bequeathed her estate to the city of Büdingen in 1985.

Westernacher was significantly involved in the planning and implementation of the Gießen – Gelnhausen railway line in 1868 for the Upper Hessian Railway . Originally a longer railway line to Gemünden (Main) was planned, so that the name was initially Gießen-Gemündener Eisenbahn . However, Kurhessen did not agree to the planning, as it feared disadvantages for its Bebra - Hanau line, which was under construction . A silver honor goblet, on the lid of which there is a small movable silver locomotive, shows the gratitude of the Gelnhauser: “Mr. Medizinalrath Dr. Westernacher in Büdingen donate this honorary gift to citizens of the city of Gelnhausen in recognition of his services to the Giessen-Gelnhausen railway line. Honor to which it is due! "

Ludwig Westernacher belonged to the Foundation Committee for the establishment of the Mathildenhospital in Büdingen , along with Mayor Heinrich Hölzinger, Pastor Christian Friedrich Meyer and Pastor Wilhelm Thylmann . In December 1867, the Comité submitted a draft statute. In the spring of 1868 the Grand Ducal Hessian government approved the hospital in Darmstadt. Immediately after the acquisition of Hofreite Mühltorstrasse 3 , construction began, so that the inauguration could take place on September 3, 1868.

Even as a schoolboy, Ludwig showed a keen interest in fauna and flora and in microscopic examinations. This tendency, especially his enthusiasm for botany, accompanied him all his life. His good mental and physical vitality enabled him to go on hikes in the high mountains until shortly before his death, during which he deepened his good knowledge of the alpine flora.
