Ludwig Joseph von Habsburg-Lothringen (born December 13, 1784 in Florence , † December 21, 1864 in Vienna ) was the Austrian archduke , general and politician.

Life

Archduke Ludwig of Austria

Ludwig was the 11th son of Emperor Leopold II. After a traditional, military-oriented upbringing , Ludwig was initially in the army . He was defeated by Napoleon as corps commander in the Battle of Abensberg in 1809 , whereupon he took his leave.

In the winter of 1815/16 he traveled with his brother Archduke Johann to France , England and Scotland . The Scottish capital Edinburgh made him an honorary citizen. On his return he received the title of general artillery director .

He represented his brother Emperor Franz II. (I.) several times, was also from this last will and testament to the head of the Secret State Conference called the 1836 to 1848 during the reign of Ferdinand I led the affairs of state.

As a representative of absolutism, Ludwig supported the politics of State Chancellor Metternich . After the March Revolution in 1848, Ludwig left the political arena and retired into private life.

Ludwig is buried in the Vienna Capuchin Crypt. His heart was buried separately and is in the Loreto Chapel of the Augustinian Church in Vienna .
