Luis Fortuño
Luis Guillermo Fortuño Burset (born October 31, 1960 in San Juan ) is a Puerto Rican politician. He represented Puerto Rico as a delegate in the US House of Representatives from 2005 to 2009 and was the governor of the US outer territory from January 2, 2009 to January 2, 2013 . Fortuño is a member of the Partido Nuevo Progresista and is close to the Republicans .
Fortuño studied at Georgetown University and the University of Virginia . In 2004 he ran for election as Resident Commissioner for the PNP . Aníbal Acevedo Vilá , who had held this office until then, was nominated by his party for the office of governor in 2004, so that Roberto Prats ran for the office of Resident Commissioner for the Partido Popular Democrático, which is closely related to the US Democrats . Fortuño was however able to prevail against his opponent. He represented Puerto Rico in the US House of Representatives from January 3, 2005.
In November 2008 Fortuño ran against incumbent Acevedo Vilá for the post of governor. He won with 52.8 percent of the vote and took office at the beginning of 2009. In 2011 he authorized the referendum on the status of Puerto Rico in 2012 .
