The Luleå Technical University , ( Swedish Luleå Tekniska Universitet , LTU for short ) in Sweden , is the northernmost technical university in Scandinavia . As such, she is a member of the University of the Arctic .
Högskoleenheten i Luleå was established on June 1, 1971 and was later called Högskolan i Luleå , although the name Luleå Tekniska Högskola was often used. It was granted full university status on January 1, 1997.
The focus is on technology; other areas are education, economics and other general science education and research . The LTU is recognized as one of the world's leading universities in tribology and metallurgy , among others .
LTU has been located on the Porsön peninsula just north of Luleå since it was founded, but it also has buildings in Piteå , Skellefteå , Boden and Kiruna . The Piteå Music Academy and the Luleå Theater School are part of the LTU. The institute in Skellefteå shares the building with the University of Umeå and the operations in Kiruna with the Swedish Institute for Spatial Physics and the Umeå universitetet. In 1999 the Boden Nursing College became part of the university, which moved to Luleå in 2006.
history
The then university unit in July was founded on July 1, 1971, the first employee was the project manager Rune Andersson. The first training in mechanical engineering began on September 1st of that year .
During 1972, a large part of the KTH geology moved to Luleå because the Swedish mining focus shifted from Bergslagen to Skelleftefältet and Malmfälten during the 20th century . The mining engineering course in geotechnology began in the fall of 1972. The professorship in mining engineering is Sweden's oldest professorship, which was established in Falun in 1819 .
Six building blocks had been erected on the Porsön by 1982. Since then, only minor extensions have been made.
During the 1980s and 1990s, a number of other technical and general science courses were added, and the existing teacher and nursing college in Luleå and Boden and the college of theater and music were connected to the college.
With the turn of the year 1996 to 1997 the college became a university and changed its name to Luleå Tekniska Universitetet.
