Manfred Schmid (born February 20, 1971 in Vienna ) is an Austrian football coach and former player.

Life

At the age of nine he joined his first football club, the 1. Simmeringer SC from Vienna. A year later he moved to FK Austria Wien , for which he played from the 1981/82 season. Josef Argauer brought the young talent to the violets back then. Under coach Herbert Prohaska he joined the fighting team for the first time and was a regular player from autumn 1992.

After the end of his professional career, he became a trainer at the Frank Stronach Academy (FSA). In the spring of 2007 he became assistant coach for the amateur team of Austria Vienna under head coach Thomas Janeschitz . In the autumn of 2007 he took over the position of head coach at SC Schwanenstadt . After the club was relocated to Lower Austria in 2008 under the new name FC Magna Wiener Neustadt , Manfred Schmid went from head coach to assistant coach at Helmut Kraft's side . After Kraft was released, he stayed at SC Wiener Neustadt and became assistant coach to Peter Schöttel and Peter Stöger .

In the 2012/13 season Schmid moved as assistant coach together with head coach Peter Stöger to FK Austria Vienna , where he was able to celebrate the championship title this season.

For the 2013/14 season he followed head coach Peter Stöger as assistant to 1. FC Cologne . With the Cologne team, he was promoted to the Bundesliga in his first season . Before the winter break of the 2017/18 season , he and head coach Peter Stöger were released from all duties in the club.

Just one week after being fired in Cologne, he and Peter Stöger received a contract with Borussia Dortmund until the end of the 2017/18 season. After the contract ended, they left the club.

In February 2019, 1. FC Köln announced Schmid's engagement as chief scout. On April 27, 2019, after separating from Markus , he became assistant coach of interim coach André Pawlak from the beginning to the end of the 2018/19 season . Together they made it back to the Bundesliga . At the end of May 2019, Willi Kronhardt was hired as the new chief scout; Schmid remained permanently as an assistant coach in the coaching team of the new head coach Achim Beierlorzer . After Beierlorzer was replaced by Markus Gisdol in November 2019 , Schmid left the coaching staff.
