The marathon of the 3 countries on Lake Constance (currently the official name Sparkasse 3-Länder-Marathon ) is an annual marathon held at the beginning of October , which leads from the Bodensee island from Lindau to Bregenz . The route leads through all three countries bordering Lake Constance, Germany , Austria and Switzerland .
History and organization
The marathon initially took place from 2001 to 2005 under the name "Dreiländer-Marathon" in October.
After the run had been stopped in the meantime, it took place again in 2007 with the Sparkasse Bregenz as the new organizer, initially under the official name "Sparkasse Marathon in the three-country corner on Lake Constance" . In 2010 the event was renamed "Sparkasse Marathon of the 3 countries on Lake Constance" . The program also includes half and quarter marathons, Nordic walking and a relay competition.
In 2009 a new record of participants was set with 5014 participants and in 2014 almost 6000 runners from 63 nations started.
The day before the main competitions, the “Children's Marathon” takes place in Bregenz. In 2017 around 2,300 boys and girls took part.
The 17th edition of the marathon took place here on October 7, 2018 and there were around 9,000 participants at the start. For the first time, the Swiss marathon champions were determined as part of the 3-country marathon. Armin Flückiger , who was in third place for a long time, overtook the leading and reigning Austrian marathon champion Isaac Kosgei on the last stretch , won with a new personal best of 2:22:44 h and was thus also Swiss champion. In the women's category, Sandra Urach from Vorarlberg won with a time of 2:47:57 h - for the second time since 2014. She won ahead of Swiss Claudia Bernasconi , who became Swiss champion with her second place.
The last and 18th event was on October 10 , 2019. The event planned for October 4, 2020 was canceled in August due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
Routing
The start is on the island of Lindau . From there the course runs along Lake Constance via Lochau , Bregenz , Hard and Fußach to Höchst . It goes over the Old Rhine to the Swiss community of St. Margrethen and then along the New Rhine back to Fußach and through the Mehrerau Monastery to the finish in the Casino Stadium in Bregenz.
