The Church of the Assumption of Mary is a Catholic parish church in Marpingen , the capital of the municipality of the same name in the southwest of the St. Wendel district , Saarland . She bears the patronage of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary . The church on the "Kirchberg", visible from afar, characterizes the townscape and is the landmark of Marpingen. In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.

history

Since the predecessor of today's church building was in a bad structural condition and also offered too little space for the parishioners due to the strong population growth , Pastor Theodor Schmitt, who worked in Marpingen from 1895 to 1910, decided to found a church building association on June 29, 1896 The purpose was to collect the necessary financial means for a new church through monthly donations. All parishioners who made a monthly contribution based on their income belonged to the association. The association was able to post revenues of 3,000 to 3,500 marks per year .

The construction plan , which came from the architect Wilhelm Hector ( Saarbrücken-St. Johann ), was presented to the church council on September 2, 1896 and approved by the episcopal vicariate on June 30, 1898.

In the following years, the old church building was first demolished, in which the entire village community participated. The building rubble was removed by truckers free of charge.

On December 9, 1900, the architect Hector was finally commissioned to finalize the plans and prepare the cost estimate . The foundation stone was laid on March 1, 1902. A document containing the following text in Latin was walled into the foundation stone :

“In 1902, on June 8th, when Pope Leo XIII. the church ruled when Wilhelm II was Emperor of Germany and King of Prussia and Michael Felix Korum held the bishopric, in the name of the Holy Trinity this church became the parish of Marpingen with 2000 inhabitants, under the pastor Theodor Schmitt from Bitburg, under the architect Wilhelm Hector from St. Johann-Saarbrücken and the builder Georg Mar from Dirmingen. "

On July 2, 1903, the feast of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary , the consecration of the completed church could take place. The consecration took place on July 5, 1905 by the then Bishop of Trier Michael Felix Korum .

Architecture and equipment

The actual church building ( nave , choir ) was built in the neo-Gothic style, while the church tower shows neo-Romanesque forms.

In terms of art history, there is a late medieval altarpiece set in under a church window on the south side of the church , which is one of the oldest evidence of the veneration of Mary in Marpingen.

One of the noteworthy items of equipment inside the church is a so-called protective mantle Madonna . The sculpture , carved from linden wood, comes from an Oberammergau art workshop. The church windows are also worth seeing. The original windows were destroyed in World War II, but replaced with new ones in 1952. The new windows were created by a Strasbourg company.

In the main altar there are relics of St. Mauritius and other Trier martyrs .

Bells

In the tower of the church there is a chiming of three bells . The two larger of these three bells date from 1950, while the smallest bell dates from 1363.
The two big bells are named "Maria in coelum assumpta" after the church patroness and "Christ-Friedenskönig-Glocke" as herald of peace and in 1950 replaced two bells that were confiscated during the Second World War and melted down into cannon grenades. These had previously replaced two bells that were confiscated during the First World War .
The smallest bell, from the 14th century, has survived in several previous Marpinger churches in the same place to this day. Its height without the crown is 62 cm and the edge diameter is 81 cm. Because of a round medallion on the bell with a portrait of St. Catherine with wheel and sword between two other figures, it is called "Catherine Bell ".

organ

The organ of the church was built in 1975 by the organ building company Johannes Klais Orgelbau ( Bonn ). The case of the main work comes from the predecessor organ from Mamert Hock . The pedal towers on the left and right of it were rebuilt. The Rückpositiv is in the case of the former Barbara altar. The abrasive loading -instrument is on a loft set consists of 32 registers , spread over 3 manuals and pedal . The action mechanism is mechanical, the stop action is electric.
