Mark Overgaard Madsen (born September 23, 1984 in Nykøbing Falster ) is a Danish wrestler . In 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2015 he was vice- world champion in the Greco-Roman style welterweight .
Career
Mark Overgaard Madsen started wrestling as a teenager in 1990 in his hometown of Nykøbing. He focuses on the Greco-Roman style. His coaches were mainly Hyllegaard Pedersen, Dan Hyllegaard Pedersen and Szimon Kogut. The 1.76 meter tall athlete starts for the BK Thor . He is also well known in the German Bundesliga because he competed for several years for 1. Luckenwalder SC since 2007 and for ASV Mainz 88 since 2013. He is a student, but he makes his living e.g. Currently with the wrestling.
His international wrestling career began at the age of 15, when he took 2nd place in the "Cadets" age group in the Nordic Junior Championships in the weight class up to 50 kg. In the following years, up to 2004, he competed in many junior world and European championships. The greatest successes he achieved were winning the European vice-champion title in 2001 in the age group "Juniors" in Izmir in featherweight and winning the European championship title in 2004 in Murska Sobota.
In 2002 he was the first Danish champion in the senior welterweight division, the weight class in which he started exclusively at international championships and was then used in September 2002 at the senior world championships in Moscow. He came there in welterweight on the 14th place. At the 2003 World Cup in Créteil, he lost to Konstantin Schneider from Germany and Thomas Dantzler from the United States and ended up in 30th place. In 2004 he tried to qualify for the Olympic Games in Athens. At the qualifying tournaments in Novi Sad and Tashkent, however, he only reached places 22 and 6, which were not enough for a starting place in Athens.
In 2005, Mark Overgaard Madsen made an enormous leap in performance. That was evident at this year's World Cup in Budapest. He reached the final there with victories over Edwin Tomas Abreu, Dominican Republic, Marko Yli-Hannuksela , Finland, Ilgar Abdulow , Azerbaijan and Reto Bucher , Switzerland, in which he however suffered a point defeat against Warteres Samurgaschew from Russia (1: 2 Rounds, 3:12 points). He became vice world champion for the first time. He was also able to convince at the 2006 World Cup in Guangzhou. There he defeated Waldemars Venckaitis, Lithuania, Andrejs Afanasjews, Latvia and Reto Bucher, lost to Wolodymyr Schazkych , Ukraine, but secured a bronze medal in the consolation round with victories over Daniar Kobonow , Kyrgyzstan and Konstantin Schneider.
In 2007 he won the European Championships in Sofia over Adam Juretzko from Germany and Ilja Schafran from Israel, but lost to Arsen Dschulfalakjan from Armenia and only reached 8th place. At this year's World Cup in Baku, things went much better for him again. He won there over Ilgar Abdulow, Sergio Solonikis, Greece, Konstantin Schneider, Christophe Guénot , France and Julian Kwit, Poland and was back in the final. In this he was defeated by Jawor Janakiew from Bulgaria and became vice world champion again.
As runner-up world champion, he was automatically eligible to start at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. But he lost his first fight against Warteres Samurgaschew in Beijing and was eliminated and only came in 19th place. In 2009 he found his way back on the road to success. At the 2009 World Cup in Herning / Denmark he won over Justin Harry Lester from the United States, Rafiq Hüseynov , Azerbaijan, Henri Esko Välimäki, Finland and Farshad Alizadeh Kalehkeshi, Iran. In the final he had to give up again. Against Selçuk Çebi from Turkey he lost quite clearly on points (0: 2 rounds, 0: 7 rounds). This was the third time he was vice world champion.
In 2010 and 2011 he was less successful. In 2012 he was able to qualify in Sofia at the qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games in London with a 2nd place for these games. In London he lost his first fight against the reigning world champion Roman Vlasov from Russia on points. He even won a round, but ultimately had to admit defeat by 1: 2 rounds and 2: 5 points. In the consolation round he triumphed over Christophe Guénot, but then lost in the fight for an Olympic bronze medal against Aleksandr Kazakevič from Lithuania. He finished 5th.
Mark Overgaard Madsen continued his career in 2013 and took a good 5th place at the World Cup this year in Budapest with victories over Hadi Alizadeh Pournia, Iran, Takehiro Kanakubo, Japan and Jawor Janakiew and defeats against Roman Vlasov and Arsen Dschulfalakjan.
In 2014 he won a medal at the European Championships for the first time in Vantaa / Finland. In the welterweight division, whose weight limit has been 75 kg since January 1, 2014, he took 3rd place.
In May 2015 Mark Madsen won the Nordic Championship in Bodø / Norway in the weight class up to 80 kg ahead of the Swede Alexander Jersgren. At the 1st European Games in Baku in 2015, he started again in the weight class up to 75 kg, but was eliminated in the quarterfinals after a defeat against Dimitri Pyschkow and only finished 7th. He was all the more successful at this year's World Championships in Las Vegas. He fought his way there in the weight class up to 75 kg with four wins up to the final, in which, however, he lost to Roman Vlasov. It was the fourth time in his career that he was vice world champion.
