The Max-Born-Gymnasium Neckargemünd (until school year 2013/2014 Gymnasium Neckargemünd ) is a high school in Neckargemünd , which is located 10 km up the Neckar from Heidelberg in Baden-Württemberg and is currently attended by around 800 students.

history

The foundation

The school development plans in the old district of Heidelberg had provided Neckargemünd as the location of a grammar school and soon a secondary school as well. The plans have been implemented since 1967. The Neckargemünd grammar school was built in several construction phases until 1984 and forms a school center together with a secondary school .

School house fire

Most of the Neckargemünd school center burned out on June 2, 2003. Investigations by the Heidelberg Police Department of the Heidelberg Public Prosecutor's Office assume that welding work on the roof of the concrete building triggered the fire. Other causes could be ruled out "with the necessary certainty".

Later investigations revealed that "the structural conditions of the roof structure for the unusually rapid spread of the fire over the entire roof area" and the rapid spread to the rooms below played a decisive role.

At 13:54, the Heidelberg police department was alerted by emergency call. When the first rescue workers arrived, an area of 20 × 80 m of the roof was on fire and the fire was already spreading into the rooms below. Explosions caused by burning gas cylinders shook the building. The fire spread quickly and there were other smaller explosions. Since the water supply via the hydrants was completely overloaded, pipes had to be laid to the Neckar for the procurement of extinguishing water. The fire was under control at around 5 p.m. During the day, around 300 firefighters from 24 fire departments were on duty. The property damage amounted to several million euros. Nobody got hurt.

After the fire, the class began on the first day of the Pentecost without a day lost classes . The school was located in the old town and in Bammental. The Volksbank, the Sparkasse, the municipal museum, the SRH group, the Protestant and Catholic parishes, the Bammental community, the Bammental GHS and the Bammental grammar school provided rooms.

School life in Menzerpark

During the 2003 summer vacation , the largest container village in Baden-Württemberg was built in Menzerpark in Neckargemünd , where the grammar school was housed for five years. The equipment met all the requirements of a modern school, and modern media found their way into the school.

New school building

The foundation stone for the new school center planned by the architects Ellen Unterstab and Marion Donnig was laid in October 2006. At the time, the new building was the most modern passive house school project in Germany.

During the Whitsun holidays in 2008, the school equipment was moved from the containers in Menzerpark to the new, but not yet fully completed school building. On June 20, 2008, the new school center was officially opened with an event in the auditorium. The then Prime Minister Günther Oettinger attended the inauguration.

renaming

In a unique grassroots democratic process, the Neckargemünd grammar school set out to give school names between 2012 and 2014. A survey in which over two thirds of all school participants wanted a school name was taken as an opportunity to get this process rolling. First, a planning team evaluated the numerous suggestions submitted for naming. Finally, three were chosen as favorites by voting in the overall teachers' conference and in the student council . The school conference then proposed the two proposals “ Max Born ” and “ Hannah Arendt ” to the city of Neckargemünd as the school authority. In the meeting on December 3, 2013, the local council approved the proposal of the school conference, which was made with the participation of all those involved in the school, with ten votes in favor, four votes against and six abstentions. On July 29, 2014, the Neckargemünd grammar school celebrated the renaming to "Max Born Gymnasium Neckargemünd" as part of a school festival with an official ceremony. Since the 2014/15 school year, the school has been officially called Max-Born-Gymnasium Neckargemünd.
