Melgaço is a small town ( Vila) and a district ( concelho ) in northern Portugal on the Rio Minho , through which the border with Spain runs. Approx. 1300 inhabitants live in the city, in the district there are 9996 inhabitants (status: 2001).
history
Finds prove a prehistoric settlement, such as the rock engravings Gravuras Rupestres do Fieiral and various excavations in Castro Laboreiro . The Romans left u. a. several bridges, also in Castro Laboreiro. Today's Melgaço was built around the castle, which was built here in 1170 and was built by Portugal's first king, D.Afonso Henriques , before he granted the place its first city rights in 1181 , which King D.Afonso II renewed in 1219 . D.Afonso III. surrounded the place with a fortress wall. In the course of the revolution of 1383 , Melgaço came under Spanish rule in 1387 , only to become Portuguese again shortly afterwards as the rule of the new Portuguese king D. João I was consolidated . In 1513 King Manuel I renewed Melgaço's town charter.
Culture and sights
The Melgaço district lies partly in the Peneda-Gerês National Park . Thematic hiking trails are also laid out throughout the county, such as wine routes, paths along the Minho bank or the archaeological sites.
The district's monuments include historical public buildings, some mansions , mills, stone fountains, and a large number of sacred buildings . The historic centers of Castro Laboreiro and Melgaço are also listed as a whole. In particular, the center of Melgaço is determined by its medieval streets, churches and buildings. Other cultural attractions include the curious Espaço Memória e Fronteria (English: Space of Memory and the Frontier) museum , which is dedicated to the history of smuggling in the border area, and the granite winery Solar do Alvarinho , which offers wines from the Alvarinho grape for tasting . Archaeological museums and the film museum Museu de Cinema de Melgaço - Jean Loup Passek , opened in 2005, should also be mentioned.
