Michael Freiherr Marschall von Bieberstein , often shortened to Michael Marschall von Bieberstein , (born July 1, 1930 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † January 19, 2012 ) was a German journalist , cultural manager and translator . He was director of the Goethe Institute and director of the Council of Europe's cultural department .

family

Marschall von Bieberstein came from the Meissen noble family of the same name . His father was the Nazi functionary Wilhelm Pleickart Marschall von Bieberstein . His grandfather the German Foreign Minister Adolf Hermann Marschall von Bieberstein . His mother Carola (née Freiin von Holzing-Berstett) was a sister of the writer Marie-Luise von Kaschnitz .

Life

Marschall von Bieberstein attended the Birklehof boarding school in the Black Forest . He then studied Romance studies , archeology and philosophy in Freiburg, Paris, Santander and Pisa . In 1956 he received his PhD with Paul Valéry's Reception in Italy as Dr. phil. PhD . From 1957 to 1959 he worked as a freelancer for various publishing houses and the Südwestfunk (SWF).

From 1960 to 1974 he was director of the Goethe Institute in Rome. He had developed an affinity for Italy at a young age and not only spent a few semesters in Pisa, but also traveled the country. Based on these experiences and insights, he fulfilled his task in Rome with diplomatic sensitivity , cultural-historical competence as well as perfect knowledge of the Italian language and mentality . Since " Freiherr " has the meaning of " Baron ", he was called "Red Baron" (after the fighter pilot Manfred von Richthofen ), which was meant affectionately, but had to be strange for a peace-loving German.

In 1973 he joined the German PEN center as a translator for Italian poets . The following year he moved to the Goethe-Institut in Paris and stayed there until 1979. From 1979 to 1985 he was director of the cultural department of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg . From 1985 to 1990 he headed the Goethe-Institut in Madrid and in 1990 he took over this function again in Rome.

After his retirement he was a speaker at the International Study Center for Economics / Business School Freiburg (ISW).

He was married to Karin Maria, née Magnus, who was six months his junior, and had eight children, born between 1956 and 1968.

Michael Freiherr Marschall von Bieberstein, who actively implemented the European concept of understanding, had an ancestor who also tried to promote peaceful coexistence, namely, his grandfather had worked on the drafting of the Hague Agreement in 1907 .

Publications

Marschall von Bieberstein published translations by Giuseppe Ungaretti , Cesare Pavese , Eugenio Montale and Pier Paolo Pasolini . In 1991 the Munich Piper Verlag published a selection and translation of Giorgio Bassani's poems in a bilingual edition ( In an old Italian garden ). He also wrote essays on contemporary literature and articles on questions of German and European cultural policy , including in the periodicals Preuves , an intellectual magazine published by François Bondy in the 1950s / 1960s, Ulisse , Merkur and Akzente, and in Die Zeit .
