List of the recently extinct fish
Of the 34,300 known fish species (as of March 23, 2020), the Red List of Endangered Species 2020 of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN ) lists the Actinopterygii (ray fins), the Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fish), Myxini (hagfish or Inger), Cephalaspidomorphi ( lampreys ) and Sarcopterygii (meat fins) together have the following risk levels. This list shows that at least 65 species of fish are extinct. In addition, an unknown number of fish taxa are considered lost or presumably extinct because at least 13,959 species have not yet found an entry in the IUCN list. Of the 595 fish species threatened with extinction, some species have probably already finally become extinct, so the number of extinct fish species is much (?) Higher than the specified 65 species. Either they have not been detected for decades, or their habitat has been so badly damaged that further survival seems unlikely. The correct year of extinction is usually not known, which is why different information is given in the literature, which can differ by decades. In this list, the year of extinction given by the IUCN is usually given.
Inclusion in the list
This list includes those fish species and subspecies whose IUCN endangered status is or (PE) and are extinct or probably extinct ( P ossibly E xtinct). Furthermore, because the IUCN list is incomplete, fish species are also included that according to other sources have become extinct. Often synonyms are also mentioned, because in various sources one and the same species is named with different scientific names, although it is the same species. The IUCN is very cautious with the judgment “extinct”, which is why even fish that have not been sighted for over half a century even have the endangered status Endangered because there is still a chance that these species could reappear (such as For example the white fish species Barbodes palaemophagus , which could only be collected once before 1924 and was also last sighted at that time and which well-known ichthyologists are of the opinion that the species is already extinct). Even animals with the endangerment status Data Deficient have in some cases not been sighted for over a hundred years (such as the char species Salvelinus inframundus , which was last sighted in 1908). There are also fish species that do not appear in the IUCN, i.e. have the status Not Evaluated , that have not been sighted for more than 70 years (such as the white fish species Alburnus danubicus , which only has the holotype from 1909 and another find from 1943 is known). However, the IUCN is also verifiably wrong, for example with the following fish, which have the endangered status extinct but have been verifiably rediscovered or have never become extinct:
- the Tanzanian cichlid Ctenochromis pectoralis , which according to the IUCN has become extinct, but which according to the FishBase online database can still be found in several rivers
- the Romanian carp fish Romanogobio antipai , last sighted in the 1960s but rediscovered in 2016
- the Bodensee-depth char ( Salvelinus profundus ), which last seen in the 1970s, but was rediscovered in, 2015.
- the Croatian carp fish Ukliva stream ( Telestes ukliva ), last sighted in 1988 but rediscovered in 1997
For more IUCN misconceptions about extinct or not extinct, see the talk page of this article .
This list assumes a worst-case scenario: if a species has not been sighted or caught for several years (and appears in one of the sources above), it is assumed to be extinct. This can have two causes: either several attempts to rediscover have actually failed (then it can be assumed that the species has actually become extinct), or the species was simply not searched for (in which case the species is at least lost).
Reasons of extinction
There are many reasons why fish are becoming extinct. An important reason is overfishing , sedimentation or phosphate over-fertilization of the waters (mostly due to the inflow of nutrients from wastewater as well as input from intensively fertilized agricultural areas ). Fish are also dying out because of dams (such as the Gezhouba dam , because of which the sword sturgeon became extinct because it was no longer able to migrate). Another reason for the extinction of fish is the genetic intermingling with other species (i.e. the emergence of hybrids , as the reduced depth of visibility of the water due to increasing water pollution makes it difficult to recognize the species and to choose the right sexual partner (see also species )). An important reason for the extinction of many fish is the introduction of invasive species, which are finally displacing the fish species, some of which have already become rare due to the above factors, especially if the original range was only a few square kilometers (for example, brown trout and rainbow trout to the extinction of New Zealand trout pike ; carp contributed to the extinction of Salmo pallaryi , and there are plenty of other fish species that made other species extinct). The deliberate drainage of water bodies naturally leads to the extinction of fish species. There are also species that for some time have become extinct in the wild, such as the Mexican Zahnkärpfling Megupsilon aporus . This species died out in the wild in 1994, 20 years later, and in 2014 in captivity. Even rising sea levels can lead to the extinction of fish, for example the goby species Asterropteryx gubbina , which inhabited reefs in the Seychelles . The rapid rate of sea level increase, the local was seaweed heavily loaded and led to the death of the plants, which ultimately the already very limited habitat of this species has been destroyed.
It is noticeable that hardly any fish that live in the sea are considered extinct in the IUCN. This is because it is very difficult to prove that there are no more such animals in the entire ocean worldwide. Therefore, one can never say with certainty that a marine fish species is extinct (see coelacanth , which was considered to be extinct for 70 million years, i.e. towards the end of the Cretaceous period , and was rediscovered on December 22, 1938).
List of fish that became extinct after 1500
The following list can be arranged not only according to the scientific name, the (seldom available) German name, the family and the endangered status, but also according to its distribution, in alphabetical order in ascending order according to the state in which the species occurs (this State is written in brackets). This list can also be sorted according to the year of the last sighting (unfortunately the year of the last sighting is not known or can be determined for all species).

The disappearance of many Haplochromis species is primarily attributed to the fish-eating Nile perch released in Lake Victoria in the 1960s (see Nile perch disaster ), which is why it was included in the list of the 100 most dangerous neobiota . However, since it has been industrially fished in this lake and has been significantly decimated as a result, many of the smaller species that were previously said to be extinct have recovered. Which species in Lake Victoria actually became extinct due to the Nile perch cannot be determined due to the poor data situation in a body of water the size of this lake. In the following, all possible species that were previously suspected of being extinct are listed. |

In Lake Lanao , the genus Barbodes formed a swarm of species of which only a few species are left ( Barbodes lindog and Barbodes tumba ). Most of the species of this genus could not be detected for some time and have probably been eradicated by the lowering of the water level due to the use of the lake water by hydropower plants, as well as by the introduction of invasive species, especially the goby Glossogobius giuris (the ichthyologists Harrison and Stiassny consider these species to be extinct). |
