List of recently extinct amphibians
Of the 8136 known amphibian species (as of March 23, 2020), the Red List of Threatened Species 2020 of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN ) lists the following endangerment levels: This list shows that at least 33 amphibian species have become extinct. In addition, an unknown number of amphibian taxa are considered lost or presumably extinct because at least 1312 species have not yet found an entry in the IUCN list. Of the 587 amphibian species threatened with extinction, some species have probably already become extinct, so the number of extinct amphibian species is much (?) Higher than the 33 species specified. Either they have not been detected for decades, or their habitat has been so badly damaged that further survival seems unlikely. The correct year of extinction is usually not known, which is why different information is given in the literature, which can differ by decades. In this list, the year of extinction given by the IUCN is usually given.
This list includes those amphibian species and subspecies whose IUCN endangered status is or (PE) and are therefore officially extinct or possibly extinct ( P ossibly E xtinct). Furthermore, because the IUCN list is incomplete, amphibian species are also included, which according to other sources have become extinct.
Often synonyms are also mentioned, because in various sources one and the same species is named with different scientific names, although it is the same species. The IUCN is very cautious with the judgment “extinct”, which is why amphibians that have not been sighted for over a century still have the endangered status Critically Endangered because there is still a chance that these species could reappear (e.g. Example the species Rhinella rostrata , which was last sighted in 1914). Even animals with the endangerment status Data Deficient have in some cases not been sighted for over a hundred years (such as the species Limnonectes khasianus , which was sighted for the first and only time in 1871 and of which even the only specimen collected has been lost). There are also amphibian species that do not appear in the IUCN, i.e. have the status Not Evaluated , that have not been sighted for more than a century (such as the species Fejervarya assimilis , which was last sighted in 1852). But the IUCN is sometimes wrong about the endangered status of individual species. For example, the two row frogs Pseudophilautus hypomelas and Pseudophilautus stellatus, endemic to Sri Lanka, have the IUCN status extinct , i.e. extinct, because they have allegedly not been sighted since 1876 or 1853; they were finally discovered in 2010 and 2009 in the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary , a national park in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. The IUCN is also mistaken with the American salamander species Plethodon ainsworthi , which also gives this species the extinct endangerment status . It is claimed that only two specimens prior to the species were collected in 1964 and have not been sighted since. The NatureServe Explorer also shares this opinion. In fact, it turned out that this species is only a synonym for the much more common Plethodon mississippi species , which does not yet have an entry on the IUCN, but which has the threat status secure in the NatureServe Explorer . There are a few other interesting examples where the IUCN has been shown to be wrong (for more IUCN misconceptions about being extinct or not extinct, see the talk page of this article ).
This list assumes a worst-case scenario: if a species has not been sighted or heard for several years (and appears in one of the sources above), it is assumed that it is extinct. This can have two causes: either several attempts to rediscover have actually failed (then it can be assumed that the species has actually become extinct), or the species was simply not searched for (in which case the species is at least lost).
One of the main reasons why so large numbers of amphibians are dying out or are close to extinction is the fungal disease chytridiomycosis . At the end of 1998 it was first discussed in connection with the global amphibian decline . Further reasons for the massive extinction of amphibians are the destruction of their habitat, the pollution and / or drainage of waters and the (often unintentional) introduction of invasive species (mostly rats or cats) which are endemic , partly due to the above factors Finally displace rare amphibians, especially if the original range was only a few square kilometers.

The following list can be arranged not only according to the scientific name, the (seldom available) German name, the family and the endangered status, but also according to its distribution, in alphabetical order in ascending order according to the state in which the species occurs (this State is written in brackets). This list can also be sorted according to the year of the last sighting (unfortunately the year of the last sighting is not known or can be determined for all species).
