Michelle Williams was born in Rockford , Illinois in 1980 as the third child of devout Christians . She began singing in the church choir at the age of seven, and later attracted attention as a member of the United Harmony quartet (of which her sister Cameron was a member). In addition to studying criminal law at Illinois State University, Williams toured the United States as a backing singer with R&B singer Monica until the end of 1999 .

After founding members LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson left , Williams finally received the offer to be part of the new line-up of the R&B quartet Destiny's Child. She then left Rockford and moved to Houston , Texas to work with the other members. Both Williams and the second newcomer Farrah Franklin first appeared in the music video for the # 1 single Say My Name , released in February 2000 . The latter left the band after only five months due to internal problems; Destiny's Child remained from then on as a trio.

In the late autumn of 2000 Destiny's Child released the single Independent Women Part I , the movie song for the box office hit 3 Engel für Charlie and the harbingers of their third album Survivor , which was released in May 2001 and which took place in the USA, Great Britain, Germany, Austria and Switzerland # 1 on the album charts. The record sold over 4 million copies in the USA alone by the end of 2001 and produced three more hit singles with Survivor , Bootylicious and Emotion (a cover version of the Bee Gees ). After the subsequent world tour, the band members parted ways in favor of solo careers in 2002 for the time being.

Two years later, in 2004, Williams, Rowland and Knowles met again to record their fourth studio album, Destiny Fulfilled . The album sold more than six million copies worldwide and produced further top 10 hits with the single releases Lose My Breath , Soldier , Girl and Cater 2 U. On June 11, 2005, the band finally announced their final split during their world tour in Barcelona , Spain . In 2012 the band started a comeback.

Solo career

Williams celebrated her first successes as a solo artist with her gospel album Heart to Yours . The CD, released in April 2002, sold more than 200,000 copies in the US alone and climbed to # 1 on the US gospel chart. With Heard a Word , however, the album only produced a single release. The singer then took on the lead role in the Broadway musical Aida for a few months .

In early 2004, Columbia Records finally released Williams' second solo album Do You Know . The record reached number 3 on the Billboard gospel charts, but with almost 80,000 units sold, it was unable to continue the success of the solo debut and was released a second time with the release of Destiny's Child album Destiny Fulfilled, including three new songs.

In early 2008 Williams was engaged in the role of blues singer Shug Avery in the musical version of the book The Color Purple . At the same time, she continued work on her third studio album, Unexpected , which was released in North America in August 2008 and, according to her own statements, will be more oriented towards R&B and dance music. The first single We Break the Dawn reached the top of the "US Billboard Dance Airplaycharts" in 2008.

In 2007 Michelle Williams got a role in Beyoncé's video for the single Get Me Bodied , which also featured Kelly Rowland and Solange Knowles . The dance track On the Run with Electric Giant Beatz was released in 2011. In February 2013, Williams performed with Destiny's Child (Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland) at the Super Bowl and sang the Destiny's Child hit Bootylicious and Beyoncé's single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) . Michelle Williams worked on her fourth album from mid-2012. Williams can be heard with Beyoncé Knowles on Kelly Rowland's album Talk a Good Game . The first publication, If We Had Your Eyes , was released for download in the United States on June 24, 2013. The fourth album is entitled Journey to Freedom . The second release in the United States is called Fire . Both of the publications failed to reach the chart. Williams, Kelly Rowland and Pharrell Williams can also be seen in Knowles' music video for the song Superpower . The first international release from their album Journey to Freedom is the single with Beyoncé & Kelly Rowland Say Yes . The single placed well in the charts and is one of Williams' most successful pieces. Artists like Fantasia , Lecrae and Tye Tribbett can also be heard on the album . Williams appeared on Centric TV Being in 2016 and talked about her time at Destinys Child. Michelle has also launched her own Home Believe bed linen collection . The fourth and final release in the United States from the album is Believe in Me , in this song Williams deals with her difficult time after Destiny's Child and the struggle with her depression. Williams was seen several times on the American talk show The Talk as a co-host. Williams got engaged to Pastor Chad Johnson in 2018, and together with him she published her life on the reality show ChadLovesMichelle . The show ran on Oprah Winfrey's Own Tv channel. In late November 2018, the engagement broke up and Williams released the track Fearless .

From September to December 2019 Williams participated as Butterfly in the second season of the US version of The Masked Singer and reached the seventh of a total of 16 places.
