Michael Todd "Mike" McEwen (born August 10, 1956 in Hornepayne , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player and coach . The defender played between 1976 and 1988, among other things, over 700 games in the National Hockey League and was active in a career characterized by numerous changes for six teams. He spent most of his NHL time with the New York Rangers and the New York Islanders , winning the Stanley Cup three times with the Islanders . He then ended his career in Switzerland, where he played for HC Sierre and EHC Olten .

Career

Mike McEwen spent his junior career with the Toronto Marlboros , with which in 1975 both the playoffs of the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League (OMJHL) won the J. Ross Robertson Cup and the subsequent Memorial Cup . In the NHL Amateur Draft 1976 he was selected 42nd by the New York Rangers and ran for the team with the beginning of the 1976/77 season in the National Hockey League (NHL). He established himself in the top division of North America as an offensive defender, so he recorded 58 points from 80 games in the 1978/79 season. In the same year he reached the final of the 1979 playoffs with the Rangers , but lost to the Canadiens de Montréal there . Then he was given in November 1979 together with Lucien DeBlois , Pat Hickey and Dean Turner to the Colorado Rockies , which in return sent Barry Beck to New York.

In Colorado, McEwen built on his previous achievements, so he scored a total of 59 points from 76 games, his career best in the 1979/80 season and as a result represented the Rockies in the 1980 NHL All-Star Game . However, his time in Denver was also marked by differences of opinion with coach Don Cherry , who was sacked at the end of the season before McEwen also left the team in March 1981, when he and Jari Kaarela were transferred to the New York Islanders , who replaced Glenn "Chico" Resch and Steve Tambellini gave up. The defender moved to the reigning champions and won three more Stanley Cups in a row with the Islanders in the subsequent playoffs in 1981 , 1982 and 1983 .

In November 1983, the Canadian was given in exchange for a four-round vote in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft to the Los Angeles Kings , where his expiring contract was not extended at the end of the season, so he joined the Washington Capitals as a free agent in August 1984 . In the same way, the Detroit Red Wings signed him in the summer of 1985, before they sent him in December 1985 in exchange for Steve Richmond to his former employer, the New York Rangers. Also with the Broadway Blueshirts , he was only active for a few months before he was given in March 1986 for Bob Crawford to the Hartford Whalers , which should represent the sixth and last NHL station of the defender.

While he was still under contract in Hartford, McEwen moved to Europe in the 1987/88 season and subsequently spent four years in the Swiss National League A , where he ended his career at HC Sierre and EHC Olten . After the 1991/92 season, during which he was again played for the New Haven Nighthawks in the American Hockey League , he declared his active career over. In total, the defender had completed 794 NHL games and collected 452 points scorer. He settled a little later in Oklahoma City and briefly trained the Blazers from the Central Hockey League there , but did not pursue this career in the episode.
