history

To the west of Puerto Montt is the archaeological site of Monte Verde , which is considered to be one of the oldest traces of human settlement on the American continent . Hunters and gatherers lived in the region as early as 12,000-14,000 years ago . The interpretation of 25,000–30,000 year old charred wood in the site as also of human origin is not generally accepted.

At the beginning of 1552 the Spanish conquistadors under Pedro de Valdivia first reached the southern extreme of the Chilean central valley in the area of today's Puerto Montt. The persistent and violent resistance of the indigenous population, the so-called Araucans by the Spaniards , meant that no permanent colonization succeeded. After the death of Valdivia, the Araucans were even able to successfully push back the Spaniards. It is said that at the beginning of the 17th century there was a Huilliche settlement in today's urban area of Puerto Montt , at the mouth of the Estero Cayenel in the Gulf of Reloncaví, where the Lota road is today. Their Kazike Cayenel is said to have carried out the last devastating attack on the Spanish colony of Osorno in 1603 .

German colonists were settled because of the immigration from Germany promoted by President Manuel Montt and his advisor Bernhard Philippi from the European revolution year 1848 , which contributed to the territorial integration of the lake region into the Chilean state.

On February 12, 1853, Vicente Pérez Rosales founded the settlement of Melipulli, which in the Mapuche language means about four hills . The floor plan was laid out in the checkerboard shape typical of colonial foundations, so that straight streets 20 m wide enclosed square blocks with 50 m side length. On October 22, 1861, the settlement was declared a city and renamed Puerto Montt ( Montt Port ) in honor of President Manuel Montt Torres . In 1885 the city had 3,480 inhabitants, including many Germans who had their own Protestant church and school. There were also several German colonies in the area.

The diocese of Puerto Montt was established in 1939. In 1963 it was elevated to the Archbishopric of Puerto Montt . The Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen , consecrated in 1892, became a cathedral with the establishment of the diocese .

On May 22, 1960, the city was badly damaged by a severe earthquake .

Attractions

The lake region around Puerto Montt is particularly worth seeing. The town itself has a handicraft market and fish specialties in the Angelmo harbor area . Puerto Montt is the station and starting point for various cruises (especially Patagonia and Chiloé ) and is also popular with trekking fans as a starting point for tours.

The small island of Tenglo lies in front of Puerto Montt . North of the city is the huge Llanquihue Lake , a very popular destination.

Economy and Transport

The main focus of economic life is on trade and transport; fishing and fish processing as well as the shipping of wood from the primeval forests also play a role.

The city's airport and port form the starting point for supplying the Chilean south ( Patagonia ); Puerto Montt is also the primary port of call for traffic from the island of Chiloé . In fact, the expanded part of the Panamericana ends in Puerto Montt. The Carretera Austral road leads south .

The German Schörghuber Group operates a salmon breeding and processing company through its subsidiary Productos del Mar Ventisqueros SA .
