Mindelo is an East Timorese Suco in the Turiscai administrative office ( Manufahi municipality ).

Before the regional reform in 2015, Mindelo had an area of ​​15.47 km². Now there are 19.73 km². The Suco is located in the southwest of the Turiscai administrative office. To the north is the Suco Aitemua , northeast of the Suco Beremana and east of the Suco Orana . In the southeast Mindelo borders on the administrative office Fatuberlio with its Suco Fahinehan , in the south on the administrative office Same with its Suco Tutuluro and in the west on the administrative office Maubisse with its Suco Manetú belonging to the municipality of Ainaro . The eastern border of Mindelo is formed by the Sui , a tributary of the Caraulun , which receives a tributary here.

There are no major roads connecting the Suco with the outside world. For the parliamentary elections in East Timor in 2007 , for example, the ballot boxes had to be brought to and from the polling station in the Escola Primaria Mindelo primary school by helicopter. On the northern border is the village of Orcenaco ( Orsenaco ), in the south the places Maubissi ( Maubisse , Maubesi , Maubessi ) and Aidila and in the east the village of Binani .

The four Aldeias Aidila , Binani , Maubissi and Orcenaco are located in the Suco .

Residents

The Suco has 593 inhabitants (2015), 300 of them men and 293 women. The population density is X30.1 inhabitants / km². There are 85 households in the Suco. Over 50% of the population name Mambai as their mother tongue, slightly less than 50% Tetum Prasa . The rest of the population speaks Sa'ane , Idalaka , Habun or Atauru .

During the Second World War , Portuguese Timor was occupied by the Japanese and became the scene of the Battle of Timor , in which Australian commandos and part of the population fought against the occupiers using guerrilla tactics . On December 12, 1942, Australian soldiers burned down several huts of pro-Japanese Timorese so that they could not serve as a base for the Japanese.

Nicolau dos Reis Lobato , the President of East Timor and leader of the resistance movement against the Indonesians , was arrested in Mindelo on December 31, 1978 by the Indonesian army and was killed.

In the 2004/2005 elections , Luís Fatima was elected Chefe de Suco. In the 2009 elections , Marcelo Barreto won .
