Routes of the Bornholmslinjen (2018-2028)

Molslinjen A / S is a Danish shipping company that was founded in 1963 and operates commercial ferry services in the Kattegat . Currently, a high-speed ferry connection is primarily operated on the Odden - Aarhus route. In addition, there will be individual trips on the connection from Odden to Ebeltoft in summer 2019 , which was not operated at least in summer 2018. The Kalundborg –Aarhus ferry and freight route was also operated until September 2011 .

In 2017 Molslinjen won the tender to operate the three ferry connections from Rønne on the Danish island of Bornholm to Ystad (Sweden), Køge (Denmark) and Sassnitz-Mukran (Germany); the transport contract runs until August 31, 2028. Since September 1, 2018, Molslinjen has been offering ferry services to the island of Bornholm under the name Bornholmslinjen .

history

In 1964, Molslinjen became a subsidiary of DFDS and remained in their possession until 1984, after which the company was sold to the J. Lauritzen shipping company . In 1988 Difko took over the shipping company in the form of blocks of shares, most of which were acquired by employees. After the establishment of the Storebælts connection and the need for consolidation, the company was converted into a public company in 1994 and listed on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange. In 1998, Molslinjen took over its competitor Cat-Link , which had previously operated the Kalundborg – Aarhus route with catamaran ferries. A year later, the tasks of DSB Reederei and Scandlines in the Kattegat were taken over. Previously, only the Odden – Ebeltoft route had been operated.

A fixed ferry connection between Jutland and Zealand has existed for a long time . As early as 1874, DFDS opened a connection between Aarhus and Kalundborg with passenger steamers, and in 1934 Grenaa-Hundested Linien started ferry operations between Djursland and North Zealand. This line faced competition in 1964 from the Juelsminde-Kalundborg lines with the ferries Julle and Kalle , and two years later Molslinjen began operating between Ebeltoft and Odden. Molslinjen was built by DFDS, which in 1960 handed over the line between Aarhus and Kalundborg to the Danish State Railways DSB .

With the oil crisis in the early 1970s, the volume of traffic fell on all routes, so that the Grenaa-Hundested and the Juelsminde-Kalundborg lines , which had merged in 1970 to form the Jydsk Færgefart (Jutland ferry company), began working with Molslinjen in 1979, which meant that there was only one ship left between Grenå and Hundested. From 1983 there was no more passenger transport between Juelsminde and Kalundborg, and in 1996 the connection between Grenå and Hundested was also discontinued.

In 2010, Molslinjen carried 2,039,687 passengers, 757,823 cars and 251,714 trucks. In the same year the shipping company had a turnover of 653 million Danish kroner and employed around 500 people.

In September 2011, the Aarhus-Kalundborg route was taken over by the Kattegatruten company of the Flensburger Förde shipping company Seetouristik ; in the course of this, the two combination ferries Maren Mols and Mette Mols were sold. In October 2013, the Aarhus – Kalundborg ferry connection was then discontinued by the accepting shipping company.

Since the end of 2015, the private equity company Polaris has held 78.9% of the shares .

Express 3

In 2017, Molslinjen won the tender for the Bornholm operation, which was previously operated by Færgen . Molslinjen has been operating the routes under the Bornholmslinjen brand since September 2018. For this purpose, the new Hammershus building was ordered from Rauma Marine Constructions in June 2016 with delivery in 2018, and the Povl anchor from BornholmerFærgen was taken over. In addition, high-speed ferries were ordered from Austal . They are intended to replace the high-speed ferries that have previously been used, which are to switch to the Bornholm routes. On January 30, 2019, Molslinjen took over the new Express 4 building from Austal. In October 2019, the Express 5 for Bornholmslinjen was ordered from Austal .

In October 2018, the Danish antitrust authority Konbewerbence- og Forbrugerstyrelsen approved the acquisition of all shares in Færgen by Molslinjen. Molslinjen operates the ferry connections previously operated by Færgen under the names Allinjen, Fanølinjen, Samsølinjen and Langelandslinjen.

Ship fleet

In 2012, the ship fleet consisted of the Incat catamaran high-speed ferry Max Mols (today Max ) (220 cars, 800 passengers, 38,480  hp , maximum speed 38 knots). and the 112.6 meter long KatExpress 1 (now Express 1 ), which went into operation on the Odden – Ebeltoft route in April 2012 and is the shipping company's largest high-speed ferry to date. The ship, which has a speed of 36 knots, has space for 1200 passengers, 417 cars and up to six buses. The sister ship KatExpress 2 (now Express 2 ) followed in May 2013.

The Express 3 ordered from InCat Australia in Hobart in October 2015 was delivered in April 2017. The Express 4 was ordered in June 2016 . Construction began in April 2017. The ship is scheduled for delivery in 2019.

In August 2018, Molslinjen took over Hammershus from the shipyard.

The Express 1 , the Hammershus and the Max are now used for traffic to and from Bornholm.

Fanølinjen operates the three ferries Fenja , Menja and Sønderho . Alslinjen uses the Fynshav and the Frigg Sydfyen . Langelandslinjen operates the ferries Langeland and Lolland . Samsølinjen uses the Samsø .

Molslinjens now scrapped high-speed ferry Mai Mols

Both in 2012 retired, long around 76 meters, Fast ferries May Mols and Mie Mols from the SWATH type "Seajet 250" could accommodate 450 passengers and 120 cars, had two GE - gas turbines , each with 12,400 kW for speeds up to 43 knots. Both ferries took 45 minutes for the route from Odden to Ebeltoft and 65 minutes for the connection between Odden and Aarhus. The Mie Mols was scrapped in Frederikshavn in November 2013, Mai Mols followed in mid-2014. The two aluminum ships had become too expensive due to their high fuel consumption. Since no buyer could be found for the ferries, which were offered for around 7½ million euros, they were scrapped after 18 years.
