The Monteverdichor Würzburg is a concert choir made up of students and alumni from the University of Music Würzburg and the University of Würzburg . The choir's concert repertoire includes the most important oratorios from the Renaissance to the modern era. The choir presented numerous Würzburg premieres for the first time in the city of Würzburg. Under the artistic direction of the conductor Matthias Beckert , the choir has established a permanent place in the cultural life of the city of Würzburg since 1998 and is known far beyond the region for its performances. The former Lord Mayor Georg Rosenthal called the choir "one of the most successful cultural ambassadors of the city of Würzburg".

As part of the Würzburg Mozart Festival 2006, the Monteverdichor Würzburg organized the anniversary concert. In 2007 the city of Würzburg honored the Monteverdichor with the award of the cultural medal for its performance “at the highest level” (quote from the laudatory speech). In 2008, the Monteverdichor organized the official memorial concert of the city of Würzburg on March 16, in which Würzburg commemorates its destruction in 1945 and commemorates those who were killed. In 2009, the Monteverdichor Würzburg was awarded the title "very good" at the Bavarian Choir Competition in Munich and passed on to the German Choir Competition as a national representative . At the German Choir Competition 2010 in Dortmund, the Monteverdichor Würzburg was awarded a 2nd prize by the international jury. In 2010 the Monteverdichor sang his masterpiece "Seven Gates of Jerusalem" in Würzburg and Rzeszów (Poland) under the direction of the famous composer Krzysztof Penderecki . The choir won two first prizes at the 2013 Bavarian Choir Competition. He also finished the 2014 German Choir Competition in Weimar with a first prize.

Formations of the Monteverdichores

The cast of the Monteverdichore is flexible and depends on the musical circumstances. In large oratorios from the 19th century onwards, the entire choir sings with over 100 choristers. The vocal repertoire from Renaissance and Baroque is performed in historical performance practice by the chamber choir formation of the Monteverdichores - the Monteverdi Ensemble Würzburg . The choir is always accompanied by an orchestra on historical instruments. The “ Marienvespers ” by Claudio Monteverdi , Bach'sJohannes Passion ”, “ St. Matthew Passion ”, “ Christmas Oratorio ” and “ B minor Mass ” as well as Handel's “ Messiah ”, “ Judas Maccabaeus ”, “ Israel” were performed in Egypt ”and“ Samson ”. In 2009 CPO released a CD by the Monteverdi Ensemble with works by Valentin Rathgeber , which received positive reviews.

Naming / references to Monteverdi

The choir was founded in 1992 as the Ecumenical University Choir Würzburg and has been called the Monteverdichor Würzburg since 2008 . In 2004 the choir dedicated itself to the composer Claudio Monteverdi with the performance of the Marienvespers . In 2009 and 2010 the Monteverdichor sang his madrigal “Sfogava con le stelle” at both the Bavarian and German choir competitions. In 2011 the “ Vespro della Beata Vergine ” will be performed again at the great abbey concerts in Münsterschwarzach , and in 2012 at the Rosenberger Musiktage . The name after Claudio Monteverdi is intended to represent the broad concert repertoire of the choir, which includes works from the Renaissance to contemporary music.
