Moritz von Froelich

Ernst August Moritz von Froelich (born January 13, 1787 in Medzibor-Neu Mittelwalde , † October 25, 1858 in Schmiedeberg ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Moritz was the son of Franz Peter Friedrich von Froelich (1752–1803) and his wife Christiane Charlotte, née von Woisky (1760–1798). His father was a Prussian Rittmeister a. D. , last in the hussar regiment "von Württemberg" , then general wagon master of the army in South Prussia .

Military career

Froelich received his upbringing in his parents' house and in the cadet house in Berlin. On April 4, 1803 he was employed as a Junker in the Hussar Regiment "von Württemberg" of the Prussian Army , where on December 7, 1805 he was promoted to cornet . During the First Coalition War he fought near Auerstedt , Zehdenick, Nordhausen, Bartenstein, Braunsberg, Heilsberg and Friedland .

In 1807 Froelich came to the "Zieten" hussar brigade, which was made up of the remains of the hussar regiments and formed as the 1st Silesian Hussar Regiment after the Peace of Tilsit . On September 6, 1810 he became adjutant to Colonel von Zieten , who at that time also commanded the Upper Silesian Brigade and with whom he served in various positions over the next eleven years. By the end of May 1814 Froelich rose to Rittmeister .

During the Wars of Liberation Froelich received the Iron Cross II. Class and the Order of St. Vladimir IV. Class for his behavior at Haynau . He was wounded at Großgörschen , fought at Bautzen , Laon , Montmirail , Paris , Ligny and Belle Alliance as well as at Liegnitz, Glogau, Oulchy, Arcis-sur-Aube , Meaux, Berry-au-Bac, Sezanne, Claye , Fleury, La Fere , Sevres and the sieges of Erfurt and Avesnes. For Laon he was awarded the Iron Cross First Class.

After the surrender of Paris in Saint-Cloud near Paris, Blücher instructed General von Zieten to convey the news to the king; he sent his adjutant Froelich. After two days and two nights, Froelich reached the king at Nancy . For this Froelich was promoted to major on July 11, 1815 and awarded the order Pour le Mérite for Belle Alliance on October 2, 1815 . On November 3, 1815, he was aggregated to the 6th Hussar Regiment , but remained with the Mobile Army Corps in France.

Leaving his position as adjutant von Zieten, Froelich was aggregated to the Guard Hussar Regiment on June 22, 1816 . He was awarded the Order of Saint Anne II on December 10, 1816 , the Legion of Honor on October 9, 1817, and the French Order of Military Merit in 1819 . On June 6, 1821 he was transferred as a regular staff officer to the Guard Cuirassier Regiment . At the beginning of July 1821, the king gave him 300 thalers to supplement his equipment. On March 30, 1828, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on May 9, 1828, he was charged with leading the 1st Cuirassier Regiment . After Froelich was appointed regimental commander on March 30, 1830, he received the Order of St. John on January 18, 1831 and was promoted to colonel on March 30, 1831 . As such, he was awarded the diamonds for the Order of St. Anne on September 30, 1835. With a patent from April 10, 1838, Froelich was promoted to major general on March 30, 1838 and at the same time appointed commander of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade in Stettin . On September 19, 1840 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, Second Class with Oak Leaves. Having been given the character of Lieutenant General Froelich took his leave on March 7, 1843 with an annual pension of 2250 thalers. On April 4, 1855 he was senior of the Iron Cross, 2nd class, with an honorary salary of 50 thalers. He died on October 25, 1858 in Schmiedeberg in the Giant Mountains.

He married on November 6, 1817 in Sedan Adelheid Perrot (1796-1825), a daughter of the businessman Perrot from Sedan. The couple had no children.

After the death of his first wife, he married Elise Eleonore von Schiller (1798–1866), widowed Löbbecke, the daughter of a merchant in Breslau on October 26, 1835. She was the widow of the Breslau merchant Theodor Lübbecke and is said to be a sister of the Imperial and Royal General Adolf von Schiller. The couple had several children:
