Moritz Heinrich von Gerstein-Hohenstein (born September 4, 1815 in Hann. Münden , † October 1, 1875 in Wiesbaden ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

Moritz was a son of the former captain of the Kings German Legion Ludwig von Gerstein-Hohenstein (1775-1826) and his wife Marianne, née Abel (1785-1827). His brother was the later Prussian Lieutenant General Friedrich von Gerstein-Hohenstein (1814-1891).

Military career

After attending grammar school in Hildesheim , Gerstein joined the Prussian Army's 6th Infantry Regiment as a fusilier on April 1, 1836 and was promoted to second lieutenant until mid-March 1838 . From the beginning of October 1842 to the end of July 1847 he worked as a teacher at the division school of the 9th Division and shortly afterwards became adjutant of the Fusilier Battalion. In this position Gerstein took part in the fighting at Obornik and Rogalin in 1848 during the suppression of the Polish uprising in the province of Posen . From February 24, 1851 to March 13, 1857 he was in command as a company commander in the 2nd Battalion in the 6th Landwehr Regiment in Freystadt , in the meantime rose to captain and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class with swords. Then Gerstein returned to his main regiment with the appointment as chief of the 8th Company. On September 20, 1861, he was commanded as a captain and chief of the 2nd company in the Duke Coburg-Gothaische Infantry Regiment under position à la suite of his regiment. Left in this command, Gerstein was promoted to major à la suite of the 1st Lower Silesian Infantry Regiment No. 46 on August 30, 1862 , and on September 4, 1862 appointed commander of the 2nd Battalion in Gotha . In the German war he led his battalion in 1866 in the Battle of Langensalza and during the main campaign in the fight in the dog home and was for his work with the Commander II. After the peace treaty, Gerstein rose to lieutenant colonel and was transferred to the 6th Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 95 , formed from the contingents of Coburg-Gotha and Meiningen-Hildburghausen , on September 25, 1867 as a regular staff officer . He was briefly commanded as a colonel for three months to lead the grenadier regiment "King Friedrich Wilhelm IV." (1st Pomeranian) No. 2 , before he was appointed commander of the 5th Westphalian Infantry Regiment No. 2 on October 10, 1868 . 53 to Wesel . At the head of this association Gerstein took part in the war against France in the battles at Spichern , Colombey , Gravelotte and Noisseville as well as the siege of Metz in 1870/71 . Winner of both classes of the Iron Cross , he was after the Treaty of Frankfurt on health grounds on 13 July 1872 awarding of the character as a major general with the statutory board for disposition made.

family

Gerstein married Marie von Donop (1818–1855) in Maspe on July 11, 1844 . After her untimely death, on March 26, 1868, in Coburg , he married Clothilde Schubert, divorced Countess von Holtzendorff (1831–1876).
