Franui (also Musicbanda Franui ) is a ten-member Austrian music ensemble from the East Tyrolean village of Innervillgraten , made up of wood and brass, string and string instruments. In addition to their own compositions, the group's repertoire includes arrangements of dances, funeral marches and songs by Franz Schubert , Robert Schumann , Gustav Mahler and Johannes Brahms .

history

The ensemble was founded in 1993 by Andreas Schett, who has been musical director since then and is responsible for the compositions together with Markus Kraler. The line-up is almost unchanged since it was founded. The name Franui refers to an alpine meadow in Innervillgraten, where the majority of the musicians grew up. The word comes from Romansh and is intended to indicate the proximity to the Ladin- speaking area. In the first few years the group performed as a house and court orchestra as part of the Villgrater Kulturwiese founded by Schett and initially played funeral marches, among other things. In the mid-1990s they appeared at various festivals. From 2005 they appeared repeatedly in various music theater productions, including the Ruhrtriennale and the Bregenz Festival , at the Vienna Burgtheater and at the Salzburg Festival .

For the 20th anniversary of the ensemble, the group gave a concert on the 2300 meter high alpine meadow Franui, to which 1,500 visitors came after a 3-hour hike. The concert program “Dance Floor Pieces” (together with Wolfgang Mitterer ) premiered in 2014 at the Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg and was released in February 2016 under the title “Dance! (Franz) ”on CD. The world premiere of “ENNUI. Does it always go on like this? ”(With Peter Simonischek and a stage design by Martin Gostner ), a music-theatrical approach to the musical cosmos of Wolfgang A. Mozart. In the same year the new recital "ALLES WIEDER GUT" was created, a collaboration with the bass-baritone Florian Boesch and the Swedish artist Jonas Dahlberg.

In 2017 and 2018, two Georg Kreisler recitals were created in collaboration with the director and puppeteer Nikolaus Habjan , "Vienna without Viennese" at the Volkstheater Vienna and "Exclusively domestic" at the Schauspielhaus Zurich .

In the Konzerthaus in Vienna , Franui has been the focus of the “Mixed sentence” festival every year since 2015; in the 2018/19 concert season, the Musicbanda will have its own cycle as a portrait artist.
