NGC 1796 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Swordfish in the southern sky . It is an estimated 37 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 20,000 light years in diameter .
The object was discovered by John Herschel on December 26, 1834 .
