NGC 7242 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E3 in the constellation Lacerta the northern sky . It is an estimated 268 million light years away from the Milky Way and is approximately 175,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 7240 , IC 1441 , IC 5193 , IC 5195 .
The Type Ia supernova SN 2001ib was observed here.
The object was discovered by Auguste Voigt in August 1865 .
