NGC 7242 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E3 in the constellation Lacerta the northern sky . It is an estimated 268 million light years away from the Milky Way and is approximately 175,000 light years in diameter.

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 7240 , IC 1441 , IC 5193 , IC 5195 .

The Type Ia supernova SN 2001ib was observed here.

The object was discovered by Auguste Voigt in August 1865 .
