NGC 7228 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SB / a in the constellation Lizard in the northern sky . It is an estimated 303 million light years from the Milky Way and about 185,000 light years across. Presumably it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair together with NGC 7227 .
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy IC 5180 .
The object was discovered by Édouard Stephan on September 1, 1872 .
