NXT TakeOver: New Orleans was a WWE wrestling event that aired on the WWE Network . It took place on April 7, 2018 at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans , Louisiana , United States in advance of WrestleMania 34 . For the second time in 2018 and for the 20th time since 2014, an event was held under the name NXT TakeOver , for the first time one of them in the US state of Louisiana.

In the weeks leading up to NXT TakeOver: New Orleans , a total of five matches were scheduled. These resulted from the storylines shown on NXT , a WWE show broadcast weekly on the WWE Network .

A new title was introduced with the NXT North American Championship .

Matches

The event began with a six-man ladder match between Adam Cole , EC3 , Killian Dain , Lars Sullivan , Ricochet and The Velveteen Dream for the newly created NXT North American Championship . The latter suffered an apparently unplanned laceration in the eye during the match . Cole was allowed to win the match after a little more than half an hour and thus became the first holder of the title.

This was followed by a singles match for the NXT Women's Championship , in which defending champion Ember Moon met her challenger Shayna Baszler . After 13 minutes, Baszler via knockout won by their submission hold Kirifuda Clutch . For Moon, it was also the last NXT match; The following Monday, April 9, 2018, she moved up to WWE's main roaster on Raw .

Then again there was a triple threat tag team match , which was also a match for the NXT Tag Team Championship and the final of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic . In this the challengers, the team of Authors of Pain ( Akam and Rezar ) as well as Roderick Strong and Pete Dunne met the defending champions Kyle O'Reilly and Adam Cole, who already played his second match that evening, from the stable The Undisputed Era . Cole stood in for the real injured Bobby Fish , who would have been O'Reilly's actual partner. Cole and O'Reilly won the match after Strong attacked his own partner Dunne, thereby joining The Undisputed Era.

The fourth match was a singles match for the NXT Championship between champion Andrade Almas , who was accompanied to the ring by Zelina Vega , and challenger Aleister Black . Vega intervened in the match several times in the context of the storyline in favor of Almas. At the end of the match, however, Vega accidentally met her partner Almas instead of the Black she was targeting. Almas then had to take Black's finishing move, known as Black Mass , and hand over the title to him.

Main Event

The main fight of the event was a singles match between former tag team partners Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa . The latter had made a turn to heel at NXT TakeOver: Chicago in May 2017 when he turned against his partner Gargano. However, he then had to pause for a long time due to a real cruciate ligament tear . For this reason, the obligatory match between the two former partners only took place around a year after their team #DIY had split up .

Johnny Gargano was allowed to win the match after just 37 minutes by giving up Ciampas in the Gargano Escape .
