The 2002/03 season was the 21st edition of the highest Finnish women's ice hockey league , the Naisten SM-sarja . The championship was won for the fifth time in a row by the Espoo Blues . The league was carried out by the Finnish ice hockey association Suomen Jääkiekkoliitto .
mode
Each team played a main round of 12 games. There were 2 points for a win and one for a draw. Some games went into overtime, if there was a winner, he received 2 points, the loser none. The first four teams of the preliminary round played for places in a double final round. The points and goals of the main round were taken. Play-off, quarter-finals and semi-finals were played in best-of-three mode, the final in best-of-five mode.

Main round
In the main round, a single round (return leg) was played. The first six teams qualified for the final round, the last two had to go to the relegation round. The last of the final round played against the best of Division 1 for the opportunity to get into the quarter-finals. The other three teams played with the qualifier in the quarter-finals. The two winners competed against those who had already qualified, the first and second placed in the final round in the semi-finals.

Relegation
In the relegation, the two teams of Naisten SM-sarja, Ilves Ylojärvi and KS Noux Espoo, who did not reach the final round, played against the five teams of the I-Divisioona that qualified for the two relegation places.
The first place TPS Turku achieved promotion to the Naisten SM-Sarja, Ilves Ylöjärvi was able to keep the class, while KS Noux Espoo was relegated. TPS also won the right to play in the current league in a quarter-final comparison for a place in the semi-finals.
