The National League Division Series 2010 (NLDS) took place between October 6th and 11th, 2010 and is part of the post season of the 2010 MLB season . It was used to determine which two teams will compete against each other in the National League Championship Series 2010 . As in previous years, the winners of the three divisions of the National League and a wildcard team took part in the two best-of-five series :

The Phillies and the Reds only faced each other once in the postseason: In the 1976 National League Championship Series , the Reds won 3-0.

The Giants and the Braves first met in the postseason: The Giants emerged from the National League Division Series 2002 with 3-0 as winners.

In his first start in a postseason, Roy Halladay managed a no-hitter , in which he only gave a single walk in the fifth inning. In the history of Major League Baseball, it was only the second no-hitter in the postseason and the first since the Perfect Game by Don Larsen in the World Series in 1956. Even during the regular season had Halladay 29 May 2010 against the Florida Marlins thrown a perfect game. This makes him the first and only pitcher to have a no-hitter in both the regular season and the postseason in one year. Halladay is also only the fifth pitcher to score two no-hitters in one year; the last was Nolan Ryan (1973).

Brandon Phillips opened the game with a solo home run in the first inning, scoring the first hit and run for the Cincinnati Reds in the postseason. Laynce Nix scored the second run in the second inning. In the third inning, Jay Bruce extended the lead to 3-0 with a solo home run. The fourth run came in the fifth inning when Joey Votto was able to bring his teammate Brandon Phillips home with a sacrifice fly.

The Phillies started their offensive in the second half of the fifth inning. Pinch-hitter Domonic Brown came on first base with a fielder's choice; two subsequent errors on the Reds' defense loaded the bases. With two outs, a single from Chase Utley gave the Phillies the first two runs. In the sixth inning, Jayson Werth walked to first base and then stole second base. Two hit by pitches loaded the bases, a subsequent walk led to the third run for the Phillies. The Reds sent Aroldis Chapman onto the mound in the seventh inning. He hit a pitch Chase Utley, scored a strikeout against Ryan Howard, and then let a ground ball through Jayson Werth, allowing Utley to reach second base. The next batter, Jimmy Rollins, hit a fly ball into rightfield, but Jay Bruce was unable to catch. This error and another one from Brandon Phillips led to runs by Utley and Werth and gave the Phillies the lead. Rollins could then achieve the sixth run. In the eighth inning, Utley stole second base after a single. The Reds let Ryan Howard with an intentional walk on first base to make a double play possible. That failed, however, when Jayson Werth hit a single in Leftfield and brought Utley home.

The total of six errors in this game set the previous record in a Division Series, which was set by the Oakland Athletics and the Boston Red Sox in the American League Division Series 2003.

In Game 3, the Reds were again dominated by the strong pitching of the Phillies. Cole Hamels threw a complete game (9 innings) without allowing the Reds to run. Five hits were matched by eleven strikeouts. Plácido Polanco put the Phillies on the scoreboard in the first inning. He had come to first base with a single and was able to advance to third base with another single hit from Ryan Howard. An error from shortstop Orlando Cabrera allowed Polanco to make the first run of the game. The second and final run came in the fifth inning by a solo home run by Chase Utley. In the ninth inning, Carlos Ruiz hit a double on a 103.4 mph pitch from Aroldis Chapman. It was the fastest litter that has ever resulted in a hit . For the Reds, it was the second game in the series in which they could not score a run. In total, they managed only four runs in the three encounters.

Game 1 was a duel between Tim Lincecum , starting pitcher of the Giants in his postseason debut, and veteran Derek Lowe. The Giants' only run came in the fourth inning. Catcher Buster Posey hit a single and then stole second base. A single from Cody Ross brought him back to the home plate. The Braves, however, could not achieve a run against Lincecum, who only allowed two hits and managed 14 strikeouts .

A Pat Burrell home run gave the Giants a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Giants' starting pitcher Matt Cain took care of the fourth run with an RBI single in the second inning. The Braves only got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning with a run by Derrek Lee. After his single, he reached second base through an error from Pat Burrell and came home through a single from Brian McCann. The Braves hit back in the eighth inning. After two singles, the Giants brought their closer Brian Wilson to the mound. He allowed a single from Melky Cabrera, which Derrek Lee came to the second run for the Braves. A double from Álex González brought two more runs and the equalizer. The following innings saw no runs. A solo home run by Rick Ankiel in the eleventh inning gave the Braves the lead. In the second half of the inning, Kyle Farnsworth didn't allow a run and secured the Braves' maiden win in the 2010 NLDS.

Game 3, October 10, 2010

Game three was dominated by the strong pitching of the two starters. Jonathan Sánchez threw six innings for the Giants without allowing a hit. Tim Hudson of the Braves threw similarly and allowed only one unearned run in the second inning until the seventh inning. Mike Fontenot hit a triple in rightfield. The next batter, Cody Ross , hit a pop fly that second baseman Brooks Conrad dropped while catching it, allowing Fontenot to run to the home plate. The Braves could only intervene decisively after Sánchez was replaced by right-handed Sergio Romo after 7⅓ innings. The Braves' manager Bobby Cox sent Eric Hinske into the race as a pinch hitter. In fact, Hinske was able to beat the Braves to a 2-1 lead with a home run. In the ninth inning, the Braves sent rookie Craig Kimbrel to the mound. He allowed a walk by Travis Ishikawa and a single by Freddy Sanchez and was replaced by left-handed Michael Dunn. Dunn gave up a single from Aubrey Huff in which Ishikawa made the second run and thus equalized. Peter Moylan took over from Dunn on the mound. The next batter, Buster Posey , hit a ground ball that Brooks Conrad let through between his legs. That third error from the second baseman brought Freddy Sanchez home and the lead for the Giants. Brian Wilson , the Closer of the Giants, gave a hit in the second half of the ninth inning, but held the lead.

Game 4, October 11, 2010

With his back to the wall, the Braves sent Derek Lowe onto the mound after just a three-day break. The first run came in the third inning for the Braves by Omar Infante after a sacrifice fly by Brian McCann. Lowe did not allow a hit in the first five innings, but in the sixth inning the Giants equalized with a home run by Cody Ross . The Braves hit back with a home run from Brian McCann in the second half of that inning and restored the lead. After 6⅓ innings, Lowe was taken out of play with Bobby Cox's bases loaded. Peter Moylan and after him Jonny Venters could not withstand the pressure and allowed the Giants to run two runs. The Braves could not turn the game around despite good chances in the eighth and ninth innings. In the ninth inning, the Giants' closer, Brian Wilson , allowed two walks. The next batter, Omar Infante, was hit by a strikeout for the second out of the inning and Melky Cabrera, who followed him, ended the game and the series with a ground ball.

For 69-year-old Bobby Cox, manager of the Braves, after his previously announced retirement at the end of the season, it was the last game after more than 4,500 games as coach of the Braves and the Toronto Blue Jays between 1978 and 2010.
