The classic family film shot by the MGM film studio is based on the novel Velvet, the girl with the horse (National Velvet) by Enid Bagnold . Helen Deutsch wrote the script . The main characters are Elizabeth Taylor , who plays Velvet Brown, and Mickey Rooney , who plays Mi Taylor. Monty Roberts doubled Liz Taylor.

content

“Little girl, big heart” is about a twelve-year-old girl named Velvet Brown who wins a horse in the city lottery . Velvet would like to take part in the largest hunting race, the Grand National , an obstacle race for horses in England, with this horse, which is called pie . The young drifter Mi Taylor takes on the training for this. Velvet is also supported, albeit secretly, by her mother. She sacrifices her savings so that Velvet can pay the entry fee. However, she also makes it clear to her daughter that this fulfilled dream could possibly be the only real high point in her daughter's life. Participation must be unofficial, as girls and women are not allowed to take part. After Velvet actually wins this race with all her strength and stamina, she is subsequently disqualified because a doctor finds out who she really is and cannot keep this fact from the race management. Nevertheless, Velvet and Mi Taylor are proud of this great success for a lifetime.

background

In 1935, Pandro S. Berman ( RKO Pictures ) applied for the film rights for Enid Bagnold's bestseller, who wanted to cast Katharine Hepburn in the role of Velvet . Because he didn't act fast enough, Paramount got ahead of him , but couldn't find a suitable actor and then sold the rights to MGM. There Berman, who had meanwhile left RKO, was finally able to realize the project.

The film grossed $ 4.25 million in the United States, about a third of the total revenue MGM made from its 30 films released that year.

effect

Due to the great success of the film, a television series entitled National Velvet , which is based on the original title of the same name, was produced for American television from 1960 to 1962 and broadcast there. In Germany, this series ran from April 3, 1961 to November 29, 1966 on ARD under the title Vilma und King . Lori Martin can be seen in the main role as Velvet / Vilma .

1978 MGM produced in Britain a kind of sequel titled International Velvet ( International Velvet ) with Tatum O'Neal in the lead role.
