The Ermesbachtal nature reserve is located in the area of ​​the town of Monschau , northwest of Kalterherberg near the Vennhof farmstead. The nature reserve covers the area of ​​the Ermesbach valley from the Belgian- German border in the west, to the Vennbahn cycle path on the embankment of the former Vennbahntrasse and to the state road 106 shortly before the stream flows into the Rur . It is located in the Natura 2000 reserve Upper Rurtal with the identification DE-5403-304.

In the source area there are high moorland areas. A steep gradient, also in the side streams, gives the stream a cascading character in some places . Typical insect larvae indicate the high water quality. On the left, shallow slope of the valley near the bank there is a patchy stand of moor birch , the undergrowth consists of pipe grass , sedges , rushes and plenty of peat moss , in drier areas dwarf shrubs and bracken in places . In clearings of the woody stock there are extensive fallow areas of heather dominated by pipe grass and dwarf shrubs, on wet subsoil there are rushes of peat moss, bell heather , bog berries and an abundance of moor lilies . The standing boulders are covered with lichen and moss . In the lower reaches of the stream flows through pastureland. On dry wasteland dominated heather .

Protection purpose

The aim is the preservation and development of the following natural habitats: flowing waters with underwater vegetation, moist heathland areas with dry heather, European dry heaths, nebulized grass lawns in the low mountain range and moor forests.

The habitats are to be protected for many according to the red list of endangered plants, fungi and animals in NRW . The area primarily serves to preserve a near-natural stretch of watercourse as a habitat for endangered plant and animal species and the preservation and development of natural habitats in accordance with Annex I of the Habitats Directive: kingfisher , black woodpecker , gray woodpecker , leg breaker , two-veined sedge

These types of biotope to be protected can be found in this area: wet and humid grassland, rocks on the surface, poor meadows and pastures, nebulized grass lawns, moors, swamps and reeds, dwarf shrub, gorse and juniper heaths
