The nature reserve Kalltal (NSG identification ACK-061) is located in the municipality of Monschau between Konzen and Lammersdorf . It is around 54.5 hectares and was designated in 1998 with the Monschau landscape plan. Partial areas were previously designated as NSG under different names. The area encompasses an approximately two kilometer long upper course section of the Kall with surrounding areas. In the west, the nature reserve extends to federal highway 258 on the Belgian-German border. In the east, in the municipality of Simmerath, the Upper Kalltal NSG connects directly with tributaries .

The nature reserve lies entirely in the much larger FFH area DE-5303-302 Kalltal and side valleys . This makes it part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas .

Area description

The Kall, known in the upper reaches of Kallbach , rises not far west of the nature reserve in Belgium . The unobstructed stream bed in the area has a gravelly subsoil, is 10 to 20 cm deep and almost a meter wide. Caddis- fly larvae living in the stream speak for the good water quality .

On both sides of the Kall there are largely fallow, species-rich grassland areas with boggy areas in places and, in some areas, also forest areas ( mainly spruce forest, in wet areas moor birch stands). The wet and humid grasslands are rushes - and seggenreich , even the snakes knotweed comes in larger stocks before. Furthermore, u. a. Marsh blood-eye , seven-star , bog lily , fever clover and spotted orchid in the area. Cotton grass and peat moss shape the bog areas.

Protection purpose

The Kall Bachtal is an important network axis in the transnational biotope network between the Hohem Venn and the Rurtal . The designation as a nature reserve primarily serves to preserve a near-natural stretch of flowing water as well as the moist to wet grassland and moor areas as a habitat for several threatened plant and animal species. Particularly to be protected animal species in the area include beaver , great mouse-eared bat , pond bat , kingfisher and whinchat .
