The common nature reserve Belgenbach is located in the municipality of Simmerath and Monschau . It begins south of the old connection road Imgenbroich to Simmerath and ends at the confluence with the Rur . The border between the two areas is roughly formed by the Belgenbach . The western part belongs to Monschau under the name of the Belgenbachtal nature reserve , while the east belongs to Simmerath as the Belgenbachtal nature reserve with Seilfertsief, Drossel- and Holzbachtal . It overlaps with the Natura 2000 protected area of ​​the upper reaches of the Rur with the identifier DE-5403-304.

The valley begins as a sole valley and turns down the stream into a sole notch valley. The brook is up to three meters wide with a stony bottom. The water flows quickly over thresholds and pools . In places a steep bank has formed. Large areas of the spruce trees near the stream were cleared in the valley and now wet fallow land rich in rushes could form, but also tall herbaceous meadows with meadowsweet and butterbur . In the long term, an alder forest will appear. In the valley floor there are some small ponds that could be abandoned fish ponds. A striking cliff runs through the slope to the west of the Belgenbacher Mühle . The Holzbach , flowing from the east in the direction of Eicherscheid, flows out above the Belgenbacher Mühle.

The area includes the lower Belgenbachtal with the valley of the Drosselbach flowing in from the northeast. Here the Belgenbach flows through a deeply cut valley. Small-area meadows can be found at the Belgenbacher Mühle. Near the banks falter also alder and maple , and occasionally Ilex . Above the mouth region of the throttle Bach, a deep valley with is ash canyon forest with sycamore and older mountain elms .

Protection purpose

The habitats are to be protected for many according to the red list of endangered plants, fungi and animals in NRW . The area primarily serves to maintain a near-natural section of flowing water as a habitat for endangered plant and animal species and to maintain and develop natural habitats in accordance with Annex I of the Habitats Directive. So here are z. B. kingfisher , black woodpecker , gray woodpecker , bullhead , yellow daffodil and bog asphodel . These types of biotopes can be found in this area: springs, wet and humid grassland, near-natural, unspoilt stream sections, rocks on the surface, rough meadows and pastures, as well as alluvial forests , swamp and swamp forests, and ravine, block and slope debris forests.
