history

Wegersleben was first mentioned in the 10th century in the land register of the Werden monastery . In 1112 as Wageresleve in a document from the Hamersleben monastery and in 1118 as Wegersleve . The part of the name Weger comes from the personal name Wagher , the ending -leben means: "legacy, inheritance".

The village and the castle Wegersleben were in the Middle Ages on the Great Bruchsee, with a ferry connection between the important Heer- u. Trade route from Leipzig to Hamburg . Not far from the village, had in the year 933, the army of King Henry I , the Hungarians in a big battle defeated.

In August 1112, the noble Thietburgis and her daughter Mathilde from the house of the Count Palatine von Sommerschenburg donated part of their estates and lands to the Augustinian monastery of Hamersleben, which had been founded a year earlier , including 21 Hufen in the then desert Wagersleve . In 1137 the Bishop of Halberstadt had a solid dam built through the breach towards the monastery. In 1140 the village is inhabited again and Bishop Rudolf had a church built on a farm under the patronage of the monastery. The noble family von Berwinkel was wealthy in Wegersleben for a long time. Gebhard von Berwinkel had before 1292 goods in the village, most recently, the family was in 1446 by Archbishop Friedrich in Weger life invested . The family died out in 1492. Heinrich von Veltheim sold the castle and goods to von Wopke in 1462. In 1477 Huysburg Abbey sold the tithes to Wegersleben for 1150 Rhenish guilders to Hamersleben Abbey. Archbishop Ernst sold the village and castle with all accessories to the Hamersleben monastery in 1494. That's why there were financial disputes between the monastery and von Wopke for years. From 1495 the village and castle fell into desolation and in 1521 the few inhabitants were parish off to Hamersleben (farmers' church). Hans von Hornhausen sold his goods to the monastery in 1531 and in 1536 the Bishop of Halberstadt decided to make the quarry arable. In 1548 the dam was destroyed, but immediately renewed by Duke Julius von Braunschweig . The lords of Neindorf, who were the main landowners and liege lords of the desolate Wegersleben, were lenders to the monastery for the next 200 years.

From the year 1751, the prelate Heinrich Nolte built a new settlement around the Vorwerk of the Hamersleben monastery, now called Neuwegersleben. After the abolition of the monastery in 1804, the place was converted into a special royal domaine. Since 1840 there was a school in Neuwegersleben and in 1842 the village had 25 houses and 125 inhabitants. The von Kotze family were wealthy here. In 1899 the place had 894 inhabitants.

As a result of the voluntary amalgamation of the municipalities of Gunsleben , Hamersleben and Neuwegersleben, the new municipality of Am Großen Bruch was created on July 1, 2004 , which meant that Neuwegersleben lost its political independence.
