Newberry is a city in Alachua County in the US state of Florida with 4950 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Newberry is approximately 20 km west of Gainesville and 130 km southwest of Jacksonville .
history
Newberry was founded in 1895. A railway line was built in 1899 by the Jacksonville and Southwestern Railway from Jacksonville to Newberry. After the company was taken over by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1904 , this extended the route to Wilcox in 1907 and to Perry in 1909 .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 4950 inhabitants were distributed among 2068 households. The population density was 42.6 inh / km². 79.6% of the population identified themselves as whites, 14.4% as African American , 0.2% as Indians and 1.4% as Asian Americans . 2.0% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.3% to several ethnic groups. 7.2% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 22.3% of all households lived in 37.4% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 73.4% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.63 people and the average family size was 3.07 people.
28.1% of the population were younger than 20 years, 27.2% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.5% were 40 to 59 years old, and 17.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 37 years. 47.5% of the population were male and 52.5% were female.
The median annual income was $ 49,623, with 18.4% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 96.07% of the population, 3.30% spoke Spanish and 0.63% spoke German .
