Nicholas "Nick" Merkley (born May 23, 1997 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player . He has been under contract with the New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League (NHL) since December 2019 and also works for their farm team , the Binghamton Devils , in the American Hockey League (AHL).
Career
Nick Merkley played for the Calgary Bisons in his youth and was selected as the ninth player by the Kelowna Rockets in the Bantam Draft of the Western Hockey League (WHL) . In the following season he was initially still in the Alberta Midget Hockey League for the Calgary Buffaloes , before he was on the ice for the first time in December 2012 for the Kelowna Rockets. This was his only game in the 2012/13 regular season , but he was used again for the Rockets in the playoff games. After that, the attacker rose to become a regular in British Columbia. In the 2013/14 season Merkley scored 58 points and took first place with the Rockets in the Western Conference . As the team with the best points in regular time, the team won the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy , in the playoffs, in which Merkley played all games, the Rockets fought their way to the conference final , where they were eliminated by the Portland Winterhawks .
Due to his good performance during the season, Merkley was awarded the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy as Rookie of the Year in 2014. In 2014/15 the Kelowna Rockets won the championship in the Western Hockey League in the form of the Ed Chynoweth Cup . Merkley scored 90 points scorer in 72 games and thus took part in the CHL Top Prospects Game , and he was also elected to the WHL West Second All-Star Team . At the Memorial Cup 2015 , the Rockets made it through to the final, but were defeated by the Oshawa Generals 1: 4. In the end, Merkley was also elected to the Memorial Cup All-Star Team .
In the NHL Entry Draft 2015 , the attacking player was selected in the first round as the 30th player by the Arizona Coyotes , with which Merkley signed a three-year entry contract on September 3, 2015 . In the following two seasons Merkley was still used for the Kelowna Rockets, in both years the team was eliminated in the playoffs in the conference finals . From the 2017/18 season , Merkley worked for the Tucson Roadrunners , the Arizona Coyotes farm team , in the American Hockey League . Merkley made his NHL debut on December 19, 2017, losing to the Florida Panthers , but was sent back to Tucson just four days later. On January 4, 2018, Nick Merkley was selected for the AHL All-Star Classic .
To have denied without further NHL games for the Coyotes, Merkley was in December 2019 along with Nate Schnarr and Kevin Bahl , a conditional first-round voting rights for the NHL Entry Draft in 2020 Suffrage third rounds for and an equally conditional NHL Entry Draft in 2021 to surrendered to the New Jersey Devils . In return, Taylor Hall and Blake Speers moved to Arizona.
International
In January 2014 Nick Merkley took part in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge for Team Canada Pacific . In the group stage, the team won all games and then moved into the final, where the team lost 4-0 to the team from the United States and thus won the silver medal. In August of the same year Merkley was part of the Canadian U18 national team, which won the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament with a final victory over Sweden .
