Niederweyer is the smallest district of Hadamar in the Limburg-Weilburg district in Central Hesse .

Geographical location

Niederweyer lies on the northeastern edge of the Limburg basin . The federal highway 54 runs from northeast to southwest about 500 meters east of the village .

The district of the place is also stretched in the northeast-southwest direction. In the west it borders on the district of Hadamar, in the north on Oberzeuzheim and in the east on Oberweyer , in the south on the Limburg district of Ahlbach . The Faulbach flows south of the village to the west. The municipal area consists almost exclusively of agricultural land, without closed forest areas. The terrain has hardly any height differences and only rises slightly to the northwest to the Galgenberg (in the Hadamar district).

history

chapel

Niederweyer was first mentioned in 772 in a deed of gift in the Lorsch Codex as "Wilere". Its location on an old street , the "Hohen Straße", between Koblenz and Wetzlar was important for the development of the town . The oldest part of the place still takes the form of a street village along the Hohen Straße, referred to in Niederweyer as "Ortsstraße". A coin find in the Niederweyer district from 1961 can be dated to the first quarter of the 13th century.

From 1567 Niederweyer belonged to the parish in Oberweyer. The first chapel is handed down from 1898. In 1962 Niederweyer got a new branch chapel with an unusual architecture. It is dedicated to the Holy Spirit . In 1971 Niederweyer received its own cemetery. All of the deceased had previously been buried in Oberweyer.

14 families are vouched for in the village in 1805; in 1939 there were 98 inhabitants and in 1972 170. In the Second World War , 13 people died in the village.

From the year 1882 there is a report of a major fire on a property on September 1st in Niederweyer, to which fire brigades from the area approached with their horse-drawn fire engines .

In 1993 a village community room was opened.

Territorial reform

On December 31, 1971, in the course of the regional reform in Hesse , Niederweyer, the smallest municipality in Hesse until then, was incorporated into Hadamar. The former municipalities of Hadamar, Niederweyer, Niederzeuzheim, Oberweyer, Oberzeuzheim and Steinbach formed the new municipality of Hadamar. Hadamar was the seat of the municipal administration.

Architectural monuments

Listed barn in the town center
Hall cross at the entrance to the village

A stone cross just behind the town exit towards Hadamar and a rock barn in the local road are under monument protection .

According to the inscription, the base of the cross was built in 1846 by a private donor from light gray marble. The cross itself and the body of Christ that exist today are of more recent date. Until a few years ago, the cross was flanked by two linden trees, which probably came from the time the base was erected.

The barn was reportedly built around 1900. The light limestone was walled up with unusual care, with basalt columns forming the eaves.

societies

In the village there is the "village community" as the only club, under whose roof a cooking club and some sports groups are located, but which do not take part in official competitions or tournaments. The defensive fire protection for low-Weyer provides for many decades, the volunteer fire department Oberweyer sure thing of also residents from low-Weyer. Similarly, local residents are mainly organized in other associations based in Oberweyer.
