The Nikon D3 is a digital SLR camera from the Japanese manufacturer Nikon . It is the first Nikon camera with a full-frame sensor . It was launched on the market in November 2007 and the D3x and D3s versions and further developments were sold until February 2012. The target group were professional photographers .

technical features

Back of the camera

The 12.1 megapixels - CMOS - image sensor enables shooting with 4256 × 2832 pixels. and a high sensitivity of ISO 25,600. The 51-point autofocus has motif recognition that can automatically attach the focus point to a moving object (manufacturer's name: 3-D tracking ). The enlarged 3-inch LC screen in 4: 3 format with a resolution of 640 × 480 pixels is also new compared to its predecessor . The oscillating mirror is folded up for the real-time preview ( live view ). The normal autofocus did not work in this position, but it is supplemented by an alternative autofocus using contrast measurement on the sensor. The Nikon D3 is the first digital Nikon SLR camera with the real-time preview known from other models. The camera weighs approx. 1.4 kg ready for use.

equipment

WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS

The camera offers WLAN and Ethernet functionality with the WT-4 and WT-4A transmitter units . It can also be controlled remotely.

Flash units

The camera is compatible with all flash units that support Nikon iTTL flash exposure.

Lenses

The F bayonet allows the use of almost all lenses with a Nikon connection. Lenses with Ai aperture transmission only work in manual and aperture priority modes, DX Nikkor lenses deliver images in DX mode with a sensor resolution reduced to 5.1 megapixels. Only non-Ai lenses can no longer be used.

Accessory connection

The camera has an accessory connector that is required for a remote release, for example. Via the MC-35 cable , it can be connected to a GPS device for georeferencing the photos. There are also special GPS receiver modules for the camera that can be connected directly to the camera without an additional cable.

Nikon D3x model

In December 2008, the manufacturer presented the Nikon D3x variant . It is optimized for studio, architecture and landscape shots, where it is not a question of light intensity, but a higher resolution. The manufacturer's recommended retail price was € 6,999 (today, adjusted for inflation, € 8,010) for the camera housing. Your image sensor has a higher resolution of 24.5 megapixels at the expense of light sensitivity, which is only ISO 50 to 6400. The series image speed of 5 frames / s ( DX mode 7 frames / s) is also lower than that of the D3 (9 or 11 frames / s).

Nikon D3s model

Nikon D3S

In November 2009 the D3 was replaced by the further developed Nikon D3s . The manufacturer's recommended retail price was € 4,999 (adjusted for inflation today: € 5,700) for the camera housing. The D3s is essentially the same as the D3 , but has the following new or further developed features:

  • A sensor that has been revised in terms of image quality at high ISO values.
  • A video mode for recording in HD quality . The sound can be recorded in stereo via an external microphone and in mono via the internal microphone.
  • An extended buffer for series picture series up to 48 RAW pictures.
  • The automatic light sensitivity can be set up to ISO 12,800 (D3: 6400), the manual remains essentially the same.
  • A Q mode for quieter recording noises.
  • A sensor cleaning.
  • Among other things, D-Lighting as an adjustable option for the dynamic range.
