Nokia Nseries
The Nokia NSeries is a mobile phone product line from the Finnish manufacturer Nokia . Telephones in this series are multifunctional devices that can be used in particular for surfing the Internet. Functions for playing music, recording videos, photography and entertainment (games) are also built in. The devices are therefore classified as smartphones . The connection to the Internet is via WLAN and / or 3G , sometimes with HSDPA .
Announcement of the nseries
The Nseries was announced by Nokia on April 27, 2005 at a press conference in Amsterdam as a high-end series. It introduced a product name that was previously unusual for Nokia. Instead of providing the models with numbers as before (e.g. Nokia 7650 or 3310 ), the models are now designated with the leading letter N , which is why one speaks of the Nseries . Three specific products have been announced: the N90 folding model , which is particularly suitable for photography (second quarter of 2005), the N70 bar device (third quarter of 2005) and the N91 MP3 mobile phone (fourth quarter of 2005). By the end of 2005, further Nseries products were promised. Together with the product announcement, the first technical details of the devices were announced. All products have in common that they are classified as smartphones as well as the use of the Symbian operating system and the S60 user interface . With the introduction of the Nseries, Nokia hoped to win back customers after declining market shares in recent years.
After the great success of the first three cell phones, several other models were announced and produced between 2006 and 2008. Special editions of the N70, N73, N80, N91 and N93 models were also published. In addition, these models are available in various product variations for different sales markets with modified functional properties.
In 2005 Nokia released the Eseries intended for the business sector , which should form the higher quality range of the overall Nokia range.
operating system
While the Nseries devices used only the Symbian OS operating system until 2010 (with the exception of the Nokia Internet Tablets 770, N8x0 and N900, which run under Maemo ), Nokia announced on June 24, 2010 that the device series would be in the future to equip with the open operating system and Maemo's successor MeeGo . The N8-00 is therefore the last Nokia smartphone in the N series with Symbian. For MeeGo, which is being developed under the umbrella of the Linux Foundation, Nokia relies on the Qt SDK , which can be used to develop both Symbian and MeeGo apps. Application developers do not have to adapt.

N7x series
The N7x series are cell phones for ambitious users who are interested in multimedia applications on cell phones. In contrast to the N9x series, this series is characterized by its balanced selection of functions.
Nokia N70
The N70 is technically an evolution of 6680 . Its equipment largely corresponds to this model, but has considerably more main memory and can therefore execute more programs at the same time (multitasking). It is also equipped with an FM radio. The camera on the back takes photos with a resolution of 1600 × 1200 pixels (two instead of 1.3 megapixels on the 6680). There is now also a music edition with a memory card with one GB of storage included. The operating system of the N70 uses Symbian OS 8.1a, Series 60 Platform 2nd Edition, FeaturePack 3. In contrast to most other Nokia devices, the N70 does not support the SIM Access Profile .
Nokia N71
The Nokia N71 is a clamshell phone that has a main display with 320 × 240 pixels and an external display with 128 × 128 pixels. It is equipped with a 2-megapixel camera, MP3 player and radio and can be expanded up to 2 GB with miniSD cards.
Nokia N72
The N72 could be seen as the successor to the N70, it has some minor functional extensions. It should appear in the third quarter of 2006, but it is not available in Germany.
Nokia N73
The N73 is similar to the Nokia N70 and can (like the N72) be regarded as its successor. The N73 has a finer resolution display (240 × 320 pixels) than the N70. It can be expanded with miniSD cards (instead of DV RS-MMC with the N70). The biggest innovation is the 3.2 megapixel camera with Zeiss lens. The cell phone appeared in August 2006 in a silver housing color. In addition to the standard edition, a music and an internet edition are available. Two variants of the N73 are also planned for the US market (N73-5 and N73-6). These are u. a. have no UMTS support and no front camera. For Japan, the N73 has been available since December 2006 under the name SoftBank 705NK .
Nokia N73 Music Edition
The N73 Music Edition comes with a 2 GB memory card and a Nokia HS-28 music headset (instead of a HS-23 stereo headset as in the standard edition) (some network operators, however, do not offer the Music Edition with memory card still delivered with headphones). In contrast to the normal silver-colored Nokia N73, its housing is black. The special edition also contains a slightly modified firmware .
Nokia N75
The N75 is a classic flip phone with external control buttons for the media player. As a quad-band device, it is intended for the US market; an introduction in Europe is not initially planned.
Nokia N76
The N76 is a fold-out cell phone with quick access keys for the media player. The interior display has a screen diagonal of 2.4 inches with 240 × 320 pixels and 16 million colors. The external display, which turns into a mirror when inactive (similar to the 7380), measures 1.36 inches diagonally with 160 × 128 pixels with around 262,000 colors. The internal memory is 26 MB and can be increased to up to 4 GB using microSD cards. A 3.5 mm jack plug enables standard headphones to be connected. Support for DRM files is new . The flat keyboard with etched lettering is reminiscent of the Motorola RAZR V3 / KRZR.
Nokia N77
The Nokia N77 was the second NSeries cell phone to feature a DVB-H receiver. It is also equipped with stereo speakers and a 2.4 ″ display that can display 16.7 million colors. As with all newer models, the memory can be expanded to 2 GB using a micro SD card. So far, the Nokia N77 has not yet made it onto the German market, as DVB-H is not yet broadcast across Germany. However, it has been available in Austria for some time.
Nokia N78
The Nokia N78 was introduced on February 11th and has been available since June 2008. The N78 is the first device in the N7x series with integrated mobile navigation. In addition to the usual equipment, this model has an integrated A-GPS receiver with free access to Nokia Maps, a 3.2 MP camera with Carl Zeiss lens and support for micro SD memory cards up to a size of 8 GB . It is the first Nokia phone with an FM transmitter, which gives the user the option of transmitting the audio output to any FM radio using an FM transmitter .
Nokia N79
The Nokia N79 is the further development of the N78. The camera now has a resolution of 5 megapixels, a double LED flash and a Carl Zeiss lens. Like the previous model, it can handle A-GPS, UMTS, WLAN and HSDPA. Different colored battery covers are included. The internal memory is 50 MB and can be expanded by up to 8 GB using microSD cards. The 97 gram model was presented on August 26, 2008 and has been available since October 2008.
N8x series
Nokia N80
The N80 , a slider model, is the first cell phone in this range to feature quad-band GSM. This makes it the very first mobile phone that transmits (with UMTS ) in five network frequencies. It had - until 2008 and together with the N90 - with 352 × 416 pixels on a screen diagonal of 2.1 inches, the highest-resolution display of the entire N series; the pixel density is 256 dpi. The N80 has a 3.2 megapixel camera as well as WLAN , UPnP , MP3 player, radio and a miniSD memory card slot. The design and parts of the button layout are very similar to the N70. The brushed stainless steel surface is also reminiscent of the N70. However, it has no camera cover. It is also available completely in black.
The N80 Internet Edition offers additional software, among other things for uploading pictures to the Internet, podcasting , VoIP and for Internet searches. There are no changes to the hardware compared to the N80. In the meantime, the firmware of both N80 versions has also been adjusted, so only the N80 Internet Edition is sold.
Nokia N81
The Nokia N81 is a slider model like the N80, but it is more geared towards music and games, so it is more similar to the Nokia N91 . It has been available in stores since December 2007 and is available in a basic version with a memory card slot and a version with 8 GB of internal memory (without a memory card slot). In contrast to the N80, the N81 (not the N81 8GB) can be upgraded with microSD cards up to a capacity of 8 GB; the device is shipped from the factory with a 2GB memory card. It has a screen resolution of 240 × 320 pixels with 16 million colors and contains a 2 megapixel camera and a 3.5 mm headphone jack, Bluetooth with A2DP support and WLAN 802.11b / g. It comes standard with the new Nokia N-Gage software, which will be able to download games and music from the Internet from December 2007. The control pad, a rounded square, is touch-sensitive and can be used in the multimedia menu in a similar way to the ClickWheel on the Apple iPod . The N81 is relatively heavy at 140 grams, which is also due to the materials used. The back of the upper slider element and the keyboard mat are made of metal.
Nokia N82
The Nokia N82 was introduced on November 14, 2007. It is designed for multimedia use due to the good camera and the outstanding gaming performance. Its hardware is comparable to the N95 8GB, but the N82 is built in bar form. Symbian S60 3rd FP1 is used as the operating system. At the start of sales, it was only available in silver, later a black variant was submitted. It has an integrated 5.0 megapixel camera, an A-GPS receiver, WLAN 802.11 b / g, Bluetooth and a 3.5 mm jack plug. Thanks to the quad-band support, it can be used almost worldwide. UMTS and HSDPA (max. 3.6 Mbit / s) are also supported. There is a VGA camera above the display, this is intended for video calls, but can also be used to take photos and videos. At 2.4 inches, the display is smaller than that of the N95 8GB, but it can also display 240 × 320 pixels and has a brightness sensor that automatically adjusts the display brightness to the lighting conditions of the environment and thus saves energy. The device supports antialiasing, which smooths the display content. The device has two stereo speakers on the right side of the housing. The GPS receiver is placed on the top of the device, which ensures better reception than with the N95. In addition, the camera is equipped with a xenon flash, an autofocus and a Carl Zeiss lens with a lens shutter. It also has a 3D accelerator, which, like in the N95 and N95 8GB, ensures smoother work and supports the N-Gage gaming platform. However, games and applications programmed with Java are also supported. The integrated A-GPS receiver makes it possible to navigate with programs that can be retrofitted. With some programs this is also possible with voice guidance. Nokia Maps 2.0 is installed at the factory and a 90-day test version is included. An update to the current program version 3.01 is possible (as of Sept. 2010). The internal memory has a size of up to 120 MB and can be expanded with micro SD cards. According to the latest information, the device supports microSD cards up to 4 GB (micro SDHC with up to 32 GB). This device supports the new copy protection standard OMA -DRM 2.0. Automatic geotagging has also been integrated with firmware version v20.0.062 . The current firmware version is v35.0.002. The device is no longer manufactured and is therefore no longer available in stores.
Nokia N85
The Nokia N85 , the successor to the N81, is the first N-Series device to have an OLED main display. It is 2.6 inches tall and offers the usual QVGA resolution; thanks to the AMOLED technology, it is more energy efficient and more colorful than the displays previously used. The N85 also has the well-known 2-way slider with special audio and game buttons and should be able to play back up to 30 hours of music and up to seven hours of videos with its particularly powerful battery. As with the N82, the main camera has 5 megapixels, but only has one flash, which consists of two LEDs . The internal memory is 77 MB and can be expanded using a microSDHC card, which is included in the scope of delivery (8 gigabytes). In addition, the so-called "Zeemote" joystick can be found in the accessories, which establishes a connection to the phone with the help of Bluetooth and serves as a replacement for the N85's navigation wheel. The Nokia N85 was introduced on August 26, 2008 and shipped in October 2008.
Nokia N86 8MP
The Nokia N86 8MP is the first N-series mobile phone with an 8 megapixel camera. It has a 28mm wide-angle lens, variable aperture diaphragm and some software-related features (such as an assistant for panoramic photos) to meet its status as the new top model in terms of cameras. However, as with the N85, only a double LED flash is installed, which makes it difficult to use in poor lighting conditions. It also shares many other hardware details with the N85, such as the OLED display with 2.6 inches diagonal and QVGA resolution, the 2-way slider and the expandability via microSD card. In addition, 8 GB of memory are already integrated. The operating system is Symbian S60 3rd, Feature Pack 2.
N9x series
The N9x series is aimed at users who want to specialize in a certain mobile application area.
Nokia N90
This cell phone is aimed at the target group of photo enthusiasts. The special feature of this mobile phone is the approx. 135 ° rotatable, high-resolution display with 352 × 416 pixels, which was otherwise only installed in the Nokia N80 and in some Nokia Eseries models, and the 2 megapixel camera unit with Carl that can be rotated by 315 ° -Zeiss lens and auto focus . It also has a small external display with 128 × 128 pixels. It is also equipped with UMTS, Bluetooth and a pop port. The battery life is approx. 48 hours with not very intensive use. This phone does not have a vibrating alert .
Nokia N91
The N91 is a mobile phone with an integrated 4 GB hard drive, WLAN and special buttons for playing music. In addition to a USB 2.0 interface, it has a jack socket for standard headphones. The N91 cannot be expanded with a memory card. Later, a model update with an 8 GB mass storage device and a black housing was also available under the name N91 8GB .
Nokia N92
The Nokia N92 is a TV phone that has an integrated DVB-H tuner. It also has a 2.8 ″ QVGA display with 16.7 million colors and WLAN. The mobile phone also comes with special software that enables teletext and TV newspapers to be called up using ESG. At 191 g, this model is the heaviest model in the N series. This device is also currently not available in Germany.
Nokia N93
The N93 has a 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and an improved video recording function, which promises better quality recordings than was previously the case with mobile phones (according to Nokia "DVD-like" , max. 640 × 480 Pixels with 30 fps) and can be connected to a television using a cinch AV cable to play back videos or pictures. It is also worth mentioning the use of a graphics accelerator, an FPU and a vertex processor in the ARM 11-based TI OMAP 2420 CPU, which is what makes the supplied 3D games (System Rush Evolution, Snakes) interesting. The integrated WLAN adapter, which enables the user to connect the phone to an access point and thus to use the Internet at low cost, is also important . The N93 can be seen as the successor to the N90.
The N93 Golf Edition is a Nokia N93 that comes with a protective case, a wrist strap and Nokia Pro Golf Sessions software . This software is on a 1 GB miniSD card. The package also includes a Nokia Golf Instruction DVD.
Nokia N93i
At the turn of the year 2006/07 the N93i , a revised version of the N93, was presented. Its dimensions are almost the same, but it weighs about 20 grams less. This makes the device look slimmer and more stylish than its predecessor. The most obvious difference is the new design of the foldable display unit, which is now smooth and reflective on the outside instead of convex and around 5 mm thinner. The OLED -Außendisplay sits similar to the Nokia 7380 behind a reflective surface, through which it shines only when activated. The color representation of the displays has also been improved. Compared to the 262,144 colors of the N93, the main display of the N93i is able to show up to 16 million colors. The arrangement of some buttons on the outside and the position of the memory card slot have also been changed in order to make operation more intuitive . The keyboard was realized in the form of a slotted metal sheet from one piece. The capacity of the battery has been reduced by approx. 10%, a tribute to the reduced height. The photos are subjected to noise reduction by software, which reduces the file size by approx. 50% compared to the N93.
The modification Nokia N93i Cinema Edition contains additional ring tones and other software add-ons for the movie Shooter .
Nokia N95
The N95 is the first Nokia mobile phone to have an integrated GPS receiver for navigation purposes. The N95 is one of the first double sliders : the rear half of the device can be moved to both sides; The numeric keypad appears pushed down, and the control buttons for the integrated music player upwards, whereby the display rotates 90 ° and the landscape format is activated: the landscape mode.
The N95 supports quad-band and is therefore suitable for almost all cellular networks in the world. It has a 5 megapixel camera, which, according to Nokia, can also record videos in "DVD-like quality" (with a resolution of 640 × 480 pixels at 30 fps) and is the first NSeries cell phone to handle HSDPA (category 6 , 3.6 megabit / s). It also has a USB interface and a 3.5 mm jack socket to which any standard headphone can be connected. Bluetooth, infrared and WLAN are among the other connection options, and UPnP is also supported here. A cinch video / stereo audio adapter can also be connected via the jack socket , with which it is possible to display the current screen content of the mobile phone display, as well as pictures, videos, games etc. on a TV screen. A hot-plug -capable microSD media slot for memory cards is also available, but released by Nokia for the first version of the cards up to 2 gigabytes of storage space for the newer SDHC cards, there is no functional warranty. Usually SDHC cards up to 16 GB work without any problems.
The GPS receiver works with the GPS 5300 NaviLink chip from Texas Instruments (the Nokia 6110 Navigator , on the other hand, contains the significantly more stable SiRF Star III chipset). Since the built-in GPS antenna is below the "0" key, the device needs particularly good reception conditions to determine its position and should be kept as horizontal as possible with the slider open. The device is not suitable as a route memory for a day hike (way tracker) - also because of the insufficient battery power. The initial position determination after switching on the GPS (cold start) takes 4 to 15 minutes; Since the operating system version 12.0.013, the N95 also has A-GPS , which usually shortens this time significantly (ideally to less than 30 seconds). The data connection required for this is only required for a short time when the GPS software is started and transfers around 7 kilobytes, which can cause additional connection costs.
The data material supplied can be used free of charge for route planning. Like the travel guide, use as a voice-guided navigation system is chargeable (runtime tariffs from 30 days). Alternatively, freeware solutions such as Nav4All or Google Maps can be used, which can access the internal GPS receiver. The map material is available free of charge.
The device received criticism after its release at the beginning of April 2007 for the short battery life. With a standby time of approx. 230 hours, the accumulator emptied itself after approx. 24 hours with moderate use of the device; intensive use it only survived approx. Three hours. Nokia has been able to alleviate this problem somewhat with a new firmware version.
Nokia N95 8GB
On August 29, 2007 Nokia announced a revised version under the name N95 8GB , which has been available since October 2007. This model offers in a black housing an increased RAM from 64 to 128 megabytes and a permanently integrated data memory of 8 GB. The display was enlarged from 2.6 ″ to 2.8 ″ with the same resolution. In addition, the N95 8GB has a significantly larger battery (BL-6F) with a capacity of 1200 mAh (N95: BL-5F with 950 mAh). In addition to the lens lock, the card slot for exchangeable memory cards has also been omitted, which has been criticized many times by the trade press, as the device was only equipped with a USB 2.0 full speed (12Mbit / s) interface (8 GB writing / reading takes at least 90 minutes). There is a version where the movie Spider-Man 3 is pre-installed on the internal memory . In autumn 2008 Nokia released a firmware update for the Nokia N95 8GB after which it became possible, among other things, to use the smartphone's position sensor, whereby the screen content is aligned depending on the smartphone's position.
Nokia N96
The Nokia N96 was presented on February 11, 2008 and appeared on October 1, 2008. It is based on the design of the N81, but the N96 is a double slider like its predecessor, the N95. The big innovations of this model are the integrated DVB-H receiver and a 16 GB internal memory that can be expanded with microSDHC cards. The 2.8 ″ display shows 240 × 320 pixels. The 5 MP camera is supported by two LEDs (advantages over single xenon flash: operation of the autofocus under poor light conditions, light for video recordings, flashlight function) and has optics from Carl Zeiss without lens protection. Mobile location determination, navigation and geotagging are possible using A-GPS . WLAN and Bluetooth serve as communication interfaces . Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 is used as the operating system. The battery is the same as the Nokia N95 (BL-5F) and is therefore weaker than that of the N95 8GB. The integrated FM radio supports RDS , which is a special feature of Nokia models; So far Nokia has not used this technology in order to promote the spread of its own development, Visual Radio .
Nokia N97
The Nokia N97 was presented in Barcelona on December 2, 2008 and was available in advance from June 18, 2009; official sales start was July 1st. In addition to a 3.5 ″ display with touchscreen and 360 × 640 pixel resolution, the device has a 33-key QWERTY keyboard that appears when the smartphone is opened to the side. By opening or closing the keyboard or - if activated - by rotating the device, the screen is switched to landscape or portrait format. It also has a 5 megapixel camera with two LEDs for taking pictures in the dark and a Carl Zeiss lens. The internal memory is 32 GB and can be expanded with a microSD memory card (max. 32 GB). Like previous models, the N97 is capable of Bluetooth , WLAN , navigation via A-GPS and HSDPA . Symbian OS v9.4 with the S60 5th Edition user interface is used as the operating system . With this device it is also possible to make calls via Skype . For the first time on a Nokia smartphone, the interface can be configured almost freely using widgets .
Nokia N97 mini
The Nokia N97 mini , available since October 2009, is the little brother of the N97. Differences between the models are the slightly smaller 3.2 ″ touchscreen (but the same resolution and therefore higher pixel density) of the N97 mini, the smaller integrated memory of 8 GB, the missing FM transmitter , a different keyboard and the missing camera cover. At 113 × 52.5 × 14.2 mm, the model is slightly smaller and lighter (138 instead of 150 grams). A travel and restaurant guide and the Nokia Store are integrated as standard in this model .
Nokia N8xx series
The Nokia N800 series is a series of Internet tablets that differ significantly from the rest of the models in this series. The features of this series are its large display (4.13 ″ diagonal), its high weight and the Maemo Linux operating system used in contrast to the other models in the N series .
