from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Norbert Michael Meenen (born June 7, 1949 in Pforzheim ) is a German trauma surgeon , surgeon and orthopedic surgeon , researcher for bone and cartilage diseases especially in children and adolescents, and professor for orthopedics and trauma surgery in Hamburg .

Career

In 1971 he began studying medicine in Würzburg, and in 1975 he was able to study at the Würzburg partner university in Padova with a scholarship . This was followed by a job as an extraordinary assistant in the vascular surgery department of Giovanni P. Deriu. In addition to his studies, he was assigned as a student assistant with scientific experimental work at the anatomical institute of the University of Würzburg at the chair of Theodor Heinrich Schiebler to carry out electron microscopic and enzyme histochemical examinations on the gallbladder epithelium. State examination , medical license and doctorate at the University of Würzburg took place in 1978.

Working life

From 1978 Meenen worked as a scientific assistant in trauma and reconstructive surgery at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf . During this time he did his alternative service as an association doctor in the disaster control in the German Red Cross . He began his first surgical scientific work on bone replacement with different biological and synthetic materials . Clinically, he was involved in trauma surgery , reconstruction and endoprosthetics with operations on the musculoskeletal system . In 1981 he moved to the Hamburg Catholic Marienkrankenhaus in the surgery department. He was trained in general and abdominal surgery here . Among other things, he has also worked in endoscopy and chemotherapy for tumor patients . He was involved in the introduction of sonography in abdominal surgery since 1983 and subsequently trained in sonography of the abdomen. In 1985 he went to Padova again to deepen his vascular surgery qualifications.

His further qualifications include the specialist in surgery in 1985 and 1986 in the field of trauma surgery . In 1989 he was appointed senior physician in hand, accident and reconstruction surgery. In 1996 the habilitation and venia legendi took place in the medical department in Hamburg on bone substitute material and cell culture . In 2001 Meenen was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Hamburg and senior physician at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. Due to the fundamental biomechanical importance of this procedure, Meenen carried out a medical historical analysis of the tension band osteosynthesis and published a book on it. His clinical focus was polytrauma , spinal surgery , joint surgery, children's joint surgery, hand surgery . He organized a joint consultation and an outpatient center for joint surgery. Meenen has been appointed an AGA Arthroscopy Instructor and is a lecturer in arthroscopy courses.

In 2008 he switched to children's orthopedics at the Altona Children's Hospital (AKK) in Hamburg as head of the children's sports medicine section . Clinical work on injuries to the knee ligament apparatus and the children's musculoskeletal system with involvement of the growth plates was carried out here . His scientific and clinical focus was on children's joint surgery with osteochondrosis dissecans . In 2014 he continued his clinical and scientific work after completing his regular work phase at the Surgical Traumatology Center of the Asklepios Clinic St. Georg under Karl-Heinz Frosch as head of children's sports medicine.

Meenen has lived in Hamburg with his wife Ille Meenen since 1979.

Scientific collaborations on tissue engineering

From 1981 Norbert Meenen carried out studies on bone defect reconstruction with the body's own and foreign bones . He then examined hydroxylapatite ceramic as a synthetic bone substitute for filling defects. For the microscopic evaluations, a new thin section technique of methacrylate developed in Hamburg was successfully used, in which collagen fiber courses can be shown in the polarization microscope as an indication of mechanical lines of force in the bone .

Meenen's concept for tissue engineering of biohybrid (synthetic biomaterial and body's own cells ) joint surface replacement ( cartilage and bones ) has been funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for years, also with its cooperation partners. For this purpose, a cell culture of chondrocytes (tissue engineering) was set up in cooperation with the TU-HH with R. Pörtner ( bioprocess engineering ) and M. Morlock ( biomechanics ). Another collaboration took place with the ITV Stuttgart ( German Institute for Textile and Fiber Research ) with M. Dauner and with the Institute for Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Technical University of Munich Horst Kessler . In this context, several international patents . submitted. Various scientific publications and popular scientific statements emerged from this project.

In 1997 Meenen was the first German scientist to point out the problem of the impact factor as a scintometric parameter in the national and international evaluation of research personalities . A working group of the medical science organization AWMF was then founded with his participation . As a result of the working group meetings, the impact factor is calculated with a correction factor when assessing individual academic performance at German faculties.

Scientific and clinical focus

Operational activity and children's consultation hours for injuries and diseases of the adolescent skeleton ( children's sports medicine ):

For the research of juvenile osteochondrosis dissecans (JOCD) there is a working group around Meenen that has been researching aspects of this chronic overload reaction on the child's skeleton since 2008: About the spontaneous healing potential of JOCD, about the vitality of the bone tissue of JOCD (no osteonecrosis), about the influence of Vitamin D3 on the healing of JOCD, on the sonographic diagnosis of JOCD as well as on special aspects of the disease from an operative-arthroscopic point of view. The working group is a member of ROCK, (Research in Osteochondritis of the Knee).

Another focus of his work is the prevention of sports injuries, especially when riding and swimming for children . He is a medical safety advisor for equestrian associations, especially the Club Deutscher Versatigkeitsreiter and German drag hunting clubs. Part of the equestrian safety activity is the implementation of courses for emergency doctors in equestrian sports . In 2018, a DIN committee “Safety in Equestrian Sport” was established with the Foundation for Safety in Sport .
