Nuran David Calis

Nuran David Calis (* 1976 in Bielefeld ) is a German theater and film author and director of Turkish - Armenian - Jewish descent.

Life

Calis is the son of an Armenian foundry worker and a Jewish cleaning lady who immigrated from Turkey. He grew up in the large housing estate Bielefeld-Baumheide , attended grammar school and worked as a doorman from 1992 onwards. After graduating from high school in 1996, he began studying directing at the Otto Falckenberg School in Munich , which he graduated in 2000. During this time he worked as an assistant at both the Münchner Kammerspiele and the Schauspielhaus Zurich .

Calis wrote his first play Urbanstorys (2005) together with young people from Hanover. His second play Dogland (2006) was published by Fischer , was shown at the Kammerspiele in 2005 and was to have its international premiere at the Burgtheater in Vienna . His third piece, Black , was discussed in Theater heute in 2007 . One of us will follow in 2008 at renowned German theaters.

In 2006/2007 Calis, who from 2000 to 2002 also worked in the field of music video and as an actor, worked on his first feature-length film script The Eyes of My Mother (2007), which was published in 2008 under the title Meine Mutter, mein Bruder und I! came into theaters.

In 2007 Calis wrote a new version of Frank Wedekind's Spring Awakening , which was a great success at the Hanover Theater . He staged the same play in 2008 at the Grillo Theater and then at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus; the Düsseldorf production received the 2009 Bensheim Theater Prize for the best ensemble performance. In 2009, a television version for the ZDF theater channel that he directed.

His play Schattenkinder , a free adaptation of the novel The Child Murderer by the Sturm und Drang poet Heinrich Leopold Wagner, premiered at the Deutsches Theater Berlin in 2010 .

In 2010, film college graduate Geraldine Laprell, Nuran David Calis and Marie-Charlotte Grawe founded SterntalerFilm GmbH as an independent film production company based in Munich, which produces feature films and documentaries.

2016 became a religious fighter at the Schauspiel Köln . Religious search between monastery, mosque and synagogue premiered, a play about faith and believers, about Christians, Muslims and Jews, about converts , radical fanatics, dogmatists and occasional worshipers.

Calis has received several awards for his theater work. For example, he was considered “Best Offspring” for directing Schiller's Die Räuber at the Vienna Volkstheater at the Nestroy Awards 2006 and was also awarded the Karl Skraup Prize as a director . In 2005 he received the playwright's scholarship from the Kulturkreis der deutschen Wirtschaft.

Nuran David Calis lives in Munich.
