Callum Joshua Ryan O'Dowda (born April 23, 1995 in Oxford , England ) is an Irish football player .

Club career

O'Dowda has been playing for Oxford since he was nine, initially in the youth academy. He received his first professional contract before the 2013/14 season, in which he was used in ten fourth division games. As eighth, "The U's" just missed the promotion playoffs. In the following season, in which he brought it to 39 league games and four goals, "The U's" as thirteenth had even less to do with promotion. In 2015/16 he helped with eight goals in 38 league games that "The U's" rose as runners-up in the third division .

In July 2016 he moved to the second division club Bristol City , where he became a regular and in the 2018/19 season the best placement was achieved with eighth place.

National team

O'Dowda is the grandson of Irish tenor Brendan O'Dowda and is eligible to play for the Republic of Ireland. He made his first appearance for Ireland on March 26, 2015 in qualifying for the U-21 European Championship 2017 . He was also used in the following six qualifying games and scored his first goal on October 9, 2015 in a 3-0 win against Lithuania .

On May 12, 2016 he was appointed by national coach Martin O'Neill as the youngest, only fourth division player and the only player without international appearances in the provisional 35-player squad for the European Championship . He was then substituted on for his first international appearance in the last friendly against Belarus before the final squad nomination, but ultimately not considered for the European Championship finals.

In qualifying for the 2018 World Cup , which began after the EM , he had four appearances. Second behind Serbia , the Irish qualified for the play-offs of the best runners-up in the group. Here they met the Danes . After a goalless draw in Denmark, in which he was used, they lost the home game without him with 1: 5. In the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League he appeared in three of the four games, with two goalless games against Denmark and losing 4-1 in Wales . In qualifying for the 2020 European Football Championship , he was only substituted on in the 2-0 defeat against Switzerland in the second half. In the end it was only enough for 3rd place. Since the group opponents in the Nations League group qualified directly for the European Championship finals, the Irish still have the chance to qualify via the playoffs in March 2020.
