action

background

The shooting of Whether you want to or not took place from May 5th to June 26th 2008. It was filmed in the format 2.35: 1 (16: 9 anamorphic ) and with Dolby Digital sound, mainly in the MMC studios in Cologne and in the communities of Laboe , Heikendorf and Schönberg in Schleswig-Holstein .

The exterior shots of the parents' house on the Baltic Sea were taken in Dormagen , North Rhine-Westphalia ; A private property in Altenberg functioned as Laura's home .

The tragic comedy was produced by elsani film and 3L Filmproduktion in co-production with CTM-Films, borderline pictures and MMC Independent . The project was financially supported by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW , the Filmförderungsanstalt (FFA), the Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein (FFHSH), the German Filmförderfonds (DFFF) and the Nederlands Fonds voor de Film.

The casting process for Whether you want it or not, stretched over a year. When casting the film, Verbong only considered actors with theater experience. The actors were not invited to audition, but the ensemble as a whole was gradually expanded after discussions with Verbong.

Katharina Marie Schubert and Anna Böger had already participated in Verbong's Herr Bello (2007), the film adaptation of the Paul Maar children's book series of the same name , and recommended themselves for another collaboration through their play. Julia-Maria Köhler was recommended to Verbong by producer Anita Elsani and her Dutch colleague Huub Stapel , who appears as a priest in the film. Christiane Paul has been on Verbong's wish list for a long time; Senta Berger had envisioned the director in the role of Dorothea from the start.

reception

criticism

Tilmann P. Gangloff from the Frankfurter Rundschau called the tragicomic cancer drama a “great ensemble film”, which is characterized above all by Verbong's direction. Bild.de, on the other hand, found that the film was “a story about family, euthanasia and loss told with great warmth and an astonishing amount of humor.” Kino.de wrote: “Somewhat predictably, the image façades are crumbling, the sisters argue and reconcile. Catharsis everywhere. Sometimes the action balances the sentimental edge by a hair's breadth and never creates the force of Alejandro Amenábar's The Sea in Me . It is thanks to the actresses that the story doesn’t crash into too much sentimentality and sentimentality ”.

Christoph Petersen von Filmstarts said: “Unfortunately, apart from the euthanasia topic, the film is far less successful. Many of the twists and turns seem constructed and the drawing of the sisters who are not suffering from cancer is characterized by cliché after cliché […] The approach of tackling serious issues such as illness and euthanasia with bittersweet humor is laudable, but it does not come here. Whether you like it or not is too schematic and uses too many clichés to make a lasting impression. ”The German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) , on the other hand, gave the production the title valuable . In its assessment, the Film Evaluation Board wrote: “The way director Ben Verbong approaches these existential issues of life and death is amazing, without denying the seriousness of the situation, but humor and lightness outweigh the rest. The great ensemble, made up of young talents and established German actors, carries this bitter and at the same time conciliatory story about life with the deadly disease and leads it to a courageous and consistent conclusion [...] Great German emotional cinema ”.
