The Inn Valley is divided into four sub-units:
- Inn and alluvial forests
- Lower terrace with cultural landscape
- Terrace landscape
- Hillside forests
Characteristic
- Broad valley on the right bank of the Inn with alluvial forest and chain of power plants.
- The alluvial forests consist mostly of gray alder , white willow - and ash . They are an important waterfowl area and there is a stable beaver population. There is conflict between anglers and environmentalists over the bird sanctuary. The alluvial forests also occur outside the power plant dams (e.g. near Mining and Kirchdorf).
- The cultural landscape between Mühlheim and Hagenau has many structural elements. Numerous hedges , small forests, orchards and swamps can be found. There are also small settlements in this subunit.
- The hillside forests are near-natural forests with ash, maple , beech, oak and hornbeam . There are also many small streams and ponds here.
- Running waters from the adjacent hill country are often regulated in the Inn Valley. The Antiesen flows through a gorge up to 40 meters deep with streak walls .
- The high and low terraces are used intensively for agriculture. This area is covered with loess , the proportion of forest is less than 4%.
- The settlement areas lie along the terrace edges and there is only a dense development in Braunau. The numerous castles and monasteries (e.g. Reichersberg Monastery ) shape the landscape.
- Traffic routes (e.g. Innkreis Autobahn ) cut through the area.
