The Oberamt Stauf was one of the fifteen senior offices with which the Principality of Ansbach had organized the administration of its territorial property. It formed an exclave within the principality and was the furthest in the southeast of this area. At the end of the 18th century, its largest neighboring territories were the Hochstift Eichstätt in the southeast and the areas around Heideck and Hilpoltstein in the northwest belonging to Pfalz-Neuburg . To the south-west and north-east, Wengen and Schwimbach, were two other places that were both exclaves of the imperial city of Nuremberg .

The administrative center of the upper office was initially located above the small village Stauf location Burg Stauf . This also gave the area its name, the largest town of which was the Thalmässing market . This also included the current districts of Alfershausen , Aue , Bergmühle , Eysölden , Gebersdorf , Hagenich , Heimmühle , Kochsmühle , Landersdorf , Neumühle , Pyras , Reichersdorf , Reinwarzhofen , Ruppmannsburg , Stauf , Steindl , Stetten , Waizenhofen and Ziegelhütte . Dannhausen formed the westernmost part of the Oberamt , which is now part of the municipality of Bergen .
