The Obere Ihleniederung is located in the Ritterhude district of the municipality of the same name in the Osterholz district , directly west of the village and north of the B 74 .

Nature reserve

In 1988 the Upper Ihleniederung was placed under protection as a nature reserve by the former Lüneburg district government . The reserve has a size of 14.17  hectares . It belongs to the natural spatial region of Stader Geest and bears the statistical code NSG LÜ 161.

The protection purpose is the "preservation and development of the Ihle spring area, which is characterized by the inflow of slope water (also known as sea ​​bog ), as a habitat for endangered plant and animal species in the spring, low and intermediate bogs".

nature

The valley of the brook Ihle was created by a sinkhole caused by the leaching of an underground salt dome. Here a fen formed first , which then developed into a raised bog . The subsidence process was compensated for by the growth of the raised bog, which resulted in a peat thickness of up to eight meters. However, the raised bog has largely disappeared again due to peat removal and drainage.

Today the upper reaches of the Ihle flows through a flat valley and is lined with damp and wet bushes and forests. Some grassland areas are available that lie fallow after they have been placed under protection. The area is of great importance for endangered plant species.

Nearby is the nature reserve LÜ 188 “ Heerweger Moor and source areas of the Ritterhuder Beeke ”. The Osterholz Biological Station , which has also carried out maintenance measures in the area, is involved in looking after the nature reserve .
