Drained level in the NSG Heilsmoor

At the end of the 19th century, the largely tree-free landscape in this area was taken into use. Parts of the moor were drained and peat was extracted as fuel by hand. After the peat extraction ended, most of the land was left to its own devices. By relocating the main drainage ditch and damming various other ditches, further drainage of the site could be prevented. In addition, since in large parts of the area it was possible to push back the woody growth by decussing , the observer is again offered the sight of a tree-free moorland. Various hand peat cuttings have now silted up again and overgrown with peat moss. Agriculture is only available in the western and southwestern parts of the area. On the northeastern edge of the area there is a large bog pond. A significant proportion of the area was bought by the Osterholz district as a lower nature conservation authority.

Flora and fauna

In the Heilsmoor there is extensive tree-free raised bog vegetation. In addition to peat moss, it also has dwarf shrubs ( bell heather , cranberries and rosemary heather ). There are bushes of the Gagelstrauch along watercourses , in water-filled peat cuttings there are both peat moss lawns and cotton grass . In other areas, the area is characterized by broken forest.

The area is home to numerous species of dragonflies and butterflies. Butterfly species typical of high moorland are moor mother-of-pearl butterflies and blue cranberries . Of reptiles come adder , grass snake , smooth snake , viviparous lizard and slow worm before. Ziegenmelker and Woodcock breed in the area, Hobby and Habicht in the neighboring forests, these types chase area. After the decussing work, the crane should also return home.

Other categories of protection

The nature reserve is in the area of FFH area 34 (Heilsmoor, Springmoor). It is surrounded by the Giehler Bach nature reserve and is close to the Springmoor nature reserve .
