The first clearly assignable place name form dates from 1428 as Grunaw superior , for 1218 a Sifridus de Grunowe is mentioned , but the connection to the place is uncertain. In 1561 Obergruna was sold by Elector August to Caspar von Maltitz zu Wendischbora , who at that time owned the Wendischbora manor . Around 1590 Obergruna was Amtsdorf in Amt Nossen , which was formed from a large part of the monastery property with the introduction of the Reformation and the secularization of the Altzella monastery in 1540. In 1686 there was a major fire in the village, which destroyed the church, the school, the parish and many houses. The current church building was inaugurated in 1687. A Vorwerk has been occupied in Obergruna since 1696. While the outbuildings were demolished, the renovated manor house is still inhabited today.

In 1820 August Schumann mentions Obergruna in the State, Post and Newspaper Lexicon of Saxony concerning a. a .:

“From the Mulde on, the village stretches in a westerly direction […] up to the Zeller Wald […]. The village therefore only enjoys a milder climate on the river [...], which, on the other hand, is a bit rough in the upper village. - It belongs by far the largest part directly under the Noßen office ; Because to the manor Bieberstein, located to the east, only the bush mill, which is located above the town on the Mulde, has 2  gears and a saw; and only about a fifth of the inhabitants are under the local manor, which has been rewritten ; some also belong to the Freiberg Mining Authority. The aforementioned manor, along with a few houses above the street, was founded in 1666 by the secret councilor von Schönberg auf Bieberstein , on what had previously been a desert, and is simply not significant. No other place is parish to the local parish church; [...]. In addition to the economy (for which they have neither large nor good corridors), the inhabitants also feed themselves very much from mining, day labor in the forest, on the street, with several handicrafts and the like. s. w. Besides the bush mill mentioned, there is also a mill on the Mulde, at the lower end of the village. There are two mines in this corridor, the blessed miner's hope and the deep help of God; [...]. Miners who work in the hope of God near Voigtsberg also live in Obergruhna. "

When the church was enlarged in 1834, the pulpit altar was also installed. The font dates back to 1863. On October 7, 1988, extensive renovation and renovation work began on the church, which had been closed for several years due to its dilapidation. The bronze bell from 1690 was supplemented by two new bells in 2002.

Until 1856, Obergruna was in the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon Office of Nossen. While part of the place was subordinate to the local Vorwerk, the other part belonged as an official village directly to the Nossen office. From 1856 the place belonged to the court office of Nossen and from 1875 to the administrative authority of Meißen . As a result of the second district reform in the GDR , Obergruna came to the Freiberg district in the Chemnitz district in 1952 (renamed the Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ), which was continued as the Freiberg district of Saxony from 1990 .

On January 1, 1994, Obergruna was incorporated into the town of Siebenlehn. Since the incorporation of the city of Siebenlehn into Großschirma on September 1, 2003, it has been part of the municipality. Obergruna has been part of the Central Saxony district since 2008.
